Logging in DNS
As shown, the error is displayed along with date, time and line numbers (5 and 13 in
this case).
Logging in DNS
There are two main phrases in logging:

Channels specify where the data is logged.
•
Categories specify what kind of data (queries, updates, statistics, and so on) has to
be logged in specified channels.
Standard channels are:

syslog

stderr
•
null
Standard categories are:

default
•
general
•
database
•
security
•
config
•
resolver
•
xfer-in
•
xfer-out
•
notify
•
client
•
unmatched
•
network
•
update
•
queries
•
dispatch

Each category of data can be sent to one or more channels. In Figure 5-1
, queries are
logged to a file, and statistics data is logged both to a file and to syslog.
