Preparing the Software Environment
Preparing the Software Environment
This subsection describes how to prepare your tape library software environment. The
required hardware should already be in place. Before further configuration:
1. Enable labeled tape processing. See Task 1. Enable Labeled Tape Processing on
page 5-1. Then the system supports labeled tape operations and all tape requests
are routed through $ZSVR. If not specified, you can use only unlabeled tapes, and
tape libraries are not supported.
2. You must have TCP/IP running on the NonStop Kernel system and on the ACSLS
library server or SMM Workstation.
3. You must have the portmapper running on the NonS
top Kernel system and on the
ACSLS library server.
4. Start the NonStop Kernel t
ape server process, $ZSVR. When starting $ZSVR, you
must have the appropriate PARAMS set. For more information, see Section 8,
Storage Server Interface (SSI) to the Tape Library Control Path.
5. The first time $ZSVR is started on a system, all drives are set to ON for
BLPCHECK and NLCHECK. If one or more tape drives need different settings for
these conditions, use ALTER TAPEDRIVE to change the settings.
6. Use the subsystem control facility (SCF) interface to the storage subsystem to add
the tape drives to the system configuration database.
Scratch Tapes
Transaction Monitoring Facility (TMF) and DSM/TC are not able to distinguish which
scratch tape volumes physically reside in a tape library and which do not. To avoid
having to respond to mount requests for tape drives in a tape library:
1. Specify the MEDIACOM ADD POOL command AUTOSCRATCH OFF option.
AUTOSCRATCH OFF changes a tape’s status to RELEASED when the tape
volume has expired. A tape volume with a RELEASED status cannot be reused
until its status has been changed to SCRATCH.
Keep only the scratch tape cartridges in the tape library and the other tape
cartridges with RELEASED status in outside tape racks. When entering tape
cartridges with RELEASED status into the tape library, use ALTER TAPEVOLUME
to change the status to SCRATCH.
