In the second stage (selected as an output tape), two states are possible:
In the third stage (assigned to a tape file), two states are possible:
For more information, see Status Changes in a Volume Catalog Entry on page 3-11.
In addition to their status of full or assigned, tapes of label type BACKUP also have a
tapeformat value, that indicates the format of the tapefiles stored on the tape. Tapes of
label type BACKUP with a status of full or assigned have one of the following
tapeformat values:
Tapeformat only applies to tapes with label type BACKUP. It does not apply to tapes
with label type ANSI or IBM.
Multiple Volume Catalogs
Most DSM/TC systems have only one volume catalog, but there is no restriction on
having multiple volume catalogs. Multiple volume catalogs can be necessary when:
Different security levels are required for the volume catalogs.
Cataloging all tapes in one NonStop SQL/MP database would take up too much
disk space on a single disk.
The catalogs for different application user groups need to be physically separate.
Selected DSM/TC selected the tape as an output tape to satisfy the request of a
TAPECATALOG DEFINE. This status is brief, indicating that the tape is reserved
for use and should be mounted on a tape drive in the next few minutes. It also
protects the tape from being requested by another application prior to being
mounted on the drive. As soon as the tape is mounted, the entry’s status
changes to In Use.
In use The tape is mounted, and the application is writing a new file to it.
Assigned The tape contains an unexpired file. Once an entry has a status of assigned, the
st
atus does not change until all the tape’s files expire.
If the tape is part of a volume set comprising several tapes, its entry retains an
assign
ed status until all files in the volume set expire.
Full A backup tape in an appendable pool is full.
Archive The tapefiles on this tape were written by the BACKUP (T9074) utility or
BACKCOPY utilitie
s, and they may be read by the BACKCOPY or RESTORE
(T9074) utilities. Tapevolumes with the tapeformat archive and status
assigned in appendable pools may be used as output tapes with the BACKUP
(T9074) or BACKCOPY utilities, but they may not be used as output tapes for
Backup and Restore 2.0.
Longname The tapefiles on this tape were written by Backup and Restore 2.0 Backup,
an
d they may be read by Backup and Restore 2.0 Restore. Tapevolumes with
tapeformat longname and status assigned in appendable pools may be used
as output tapes with Backup and Restore 2.0, but they may not be used as
output tapes for the BACKUP (T9074) or BACKCOPY utilities.
