Copying a Volume Set Created by the BACKUP
Utility
For example, this table shows two volume sets. The first volume set is one tape with
two files. The second volume set is three tapes with four files.
After 90 days, both files on TAP022 expire, and the volume catalog entry for TAP022 is
changed from assigned to released or scratch. The files for the second volume set
have different retention periods, so the volume catalog entries for TAP055, TAP057,
and TA060 do not change to released or scratch until 105 days have elapsed.
Copying a Volume Set Created by the BACKUP Utility
This subsection explains how DSM/TC tracks volume sets created by the standard
BACKUP and BACKCOPY utilities and the Backup Restore 2.0 BACKUP command.
For more information on the BACKUP and BACKCOPY utilities, see the Guardian Disk
and Tape Utilities Reference Manual. For more information on the Backup Restore 2.0
BACKUP command, see the Backup Restore 2.0 Manual.
BACKUP or BACKCOPY in Parallel Mode
Both the standard BACKUP and BACKCOPY utilities, when run in parallel mode,
produce two volume sets that are identical in all respects, including the number of reels
used and the amount of data written per reel. This represents the results of a BACKUP
operation run in parallel mode:
Both copies have an identical number in the physical portion of the tape file or disk file
entry, but DSM/TC enters a 1 or a 2 in the logical copy portion of the entries in the
DSM/TC database to distinguish between the copies. Because each reel in the first
volume set created in parallel mode is identical to the comparable reel in the second
volume set, reels can be substituted freely between these copies.
While performing parallel backup using AVRSYSTEM on a secondary system, you can
identify the parallel backup from the local backup image by checking the value of the
logical copy. The logical copy value of the backup image on a secondary system will be
2.
