Automatic Selection and Mounting of Tapes
This example for an unlabeled tape shows a BACKUP command that does not use
a DEFINE. In this case, the drive writes data using the system default specification:
1>BACKUP $TAPE, $DATA.*.*

Automatic Selection and Mounting of Tapes
Use the ALTER MEDIADEFS command with the AUTOMATED option (ON and OFF)
to determine how many times an attempt is made to automatically select and mount a
scratch tape (from DSM/TC or TMF) into a tape drive in a tape library.

This option’s value is used as the default when the AUTOMATED attribute is not
specified in a TAPECATALOG DEFINE.
Default NL and BLP Behavior
The ALTER TAPEDRIVE command is used to determine whether approval must be
given for an application to use a tape drive for bypass label processing mode
(BLPCHECK) or no label processing mode (NLCHECK).
The settings of the BLP
CHECK or NLCHECK options remain in effect until another
ALTER TAPEDRIVE command changes the setting in the current or a subsequent
session. To display the current setting, use the INFO TAPEDRIVE command.

BLP and NL Settings After Starting $ZSVR
Once the BLP and NL settings are configured, they need not be entered again. They
are stored in $SYSTEM.SYSTEM in the ZSVRCONF file. ZSVRCONF can be moved
to the SYSnn. Each time $ZSVR is started, the old values are used automatically.
ZSVRCONF stores NLCHECK, BLPCHECK, and optionally an LSM address for each
tape drive configured on the system.
Note. Applications specifying a TAPE DEFINE always use the system default specification
because no COMPRESSION attribute exists for a TAPE DEFINE.
