Minimizing Unplanned Outage Minutes

Creating an alternate system disk so that it is possible to recover from unexpected
difficulties in any of these problem-management procedures.
Minimizing Unplanned Outage Minutes
These strategies can help you reduce the number of outage minutes caused by an
unplanned outage:
•
Using a systematic problem-solving approach to handling problems
•
Automating recovery procedures
•
Preparing a disaster-recovery plan
•
Reviewing, testing, and documenting problem-detection, escalation, and recovery
procedures
These and other problem-management strategies are described in detail in the
Availability Guide for Problem Management.
Power Failures
An AC power failure is one cause of unplanned outages. During an AC power failure, if
your system is equipped with a UPS and possibly one or two ERMs in each cabinet,
you must begin an orderly shutdown in time for it to complete before exhausting the
batteries.
If the air conditioning equipment at your site does not have auxiliary power support to
keep it running during a power failure, the site’s ambient temperature rises rapidly. The
rapid temperature rise might cause the internal temperature for the system to exceed
limits when power fails, causing the system to halt abruptly.
At the onset of a power failure, any peripheral equipment running without power back-
up support from a UPS fails and is not available.
Planning for FRU Replacement
User or system operations personnel cannot work with Field replaceable units (FRUs).
Only trained service providers, such as HP customer engineers, can replace FRUs in
Integrity NonStop NS-series system. Work with your account team to determine the
service strategy for your system and application.
Caution. Be sure the time allowed for a system shutdown on UPS power is sufficient for the
operation to complete. If the battery power is exhausted before the shutdown completes, data
corruption might occur
Caution. When a power failure occurs with no auxiliary power available for air conditioning
equipment at the site, initiate a system shutdown immediately. If the system halts because of
internal over-temperature, data loss and corruption might occur.
