NonStop NS16000 Series Planning Guide (H06.11+)
SAS disk enclosures connect to Storage CLIMs via SAS cables. For details on cable types, refer to
Appendix A (page 150).
Factory-Default Disk Volume Locations for SAS Disk Devices
This illustration shows where the factory-default locations for the primary and mirror system disk
volumes reside in separate disk enclosures:
SAS Ports to SAS Disk Enclosures
SAS disk enclosures can be connected directly to the HBA SAS ports on a Storage CLIM. A Storage
CLIM pair supports a maximum of four SAS disk enclosures. If it is necessary to minimize SAS
HBAs, four SAS disk enclosures connected to DL385 G2 or G5 CLIMs can be configured as
daisy-chains of two SAS disk enclosures on two SAS ports. The four SAS disk enclosures connected
to DL380 G6 CLIMs cannot be daisy-chained.
SAS Ports to SAS Tape Devices
SAS tape devices have one SAS port that can be directly connected to the HBA SAS port on a
Storage CLIM. Each SAS tape enclosure supports two tape drives. With a SAS tape drive connected
to the system, you can use the BACKUP and RESTORE utilities to save data to and restore data
from tape.
Configuration Restrictions for Storage CLIMs
• The maximum number of logical unit numbers (LUNs) for each CLIM, including SAS disks, ESS
and tapes is 512. Each primary, backup, mirror and mirror backup path is counted in this
maximum.
• SAS disk enclosures connected to DL385 G2 or G5 CLIMs support a maximum daisy-chain
depth of two SAS disk enclosures. SAS disk enclosures connected to DL380 G6 CLIMs cannot
be daisy-chained.
