NonStop NS16000 Series Planning Guide (H06.11+)

These restrictions or requirements apply when integrating NonStop S-series I/O enclosures into an
Integrity NonStop NS16000 series system:
Only NonStop S-series I/O enclosures equipped with IOMF 2 CRUs can be connected to an
Integrity NonStop NS16000 series system. The IOMF 2 CRU must have an MMF PIC installed.
NonStop S-series system enclosures can be converted to NonStop S-series I/O enclosures,
replacing the two PMF CRUs in each enclosure with IOMF 2 CRUs. See the conversion
instructions in the Hardware Service and Maintenance Publications category of the Support
and Service Library of NTL.
Disk drives and ServerNet adapters (except SEB and MSEB CRUs) used in NonStop S-series
I/O enclosures, as well as devices that are downstream of these enclosures, are compatible
with NonStop NS-series hardware. For information about the disk drives and adapters, see
the manual for that disk drive or adapter.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to use NonStop S-series SEB or MSEB CRUs in NonStop S-series
I/O enclosures connected to Integrity NonStop NS16000 series systems. System failures can
result.
Connection to a NonStop S-series I/O enclosure cannot be on the same p-switch PIC that
connects to an IOAM enclosure.
Each p-switch (for the X or Y ServerNet fabric) has up to six I/O PICs, with one I/O PIC
required for each IOAM enclosure in the system. Each NonStop S-series I/O enclosure uses
one port on one PIC, so a maximum of 24 NonStop S-series I/O enclosures can be connected
to an Integrity NonStop NS16000 series system if no IOAM enclosure is installed.
Assignment of the group number of each NonStop S-series I/O enclosure depends on the
cable connection to the p-switch PIC by slot and port as described in “NonStop S-Series I/O
Enclosure Group Numbers” (page 29). Only NonStop S-series I/O enclosures with these
group numbers can be connected to an Integrity NonStop NS16000 series system:
11 through14
21 through 24
31 through 34
41 through 44
51 through 54
61 through 64
For NonStop S-series I/O enclosures that have a nonsupported group number, change
the group number as described in the NonStop S-Series Planning and Configuration
Guide.
Cables required are:
An LC-SC multimode fiber-optic cable connects each IOMF 2 CRU to a p-switch in an
Integrity NonStop NS16000 series system.
A serial cable from each SPON connector on the p-switch carries power-on signals to
the NonStop S-series I/O enclosure. This is a unidirectional SPON cable used only for
connection between a a p-switch in an Integrity NonStop NS16000 series system and
the IOMF 2 CRU in the NonStop S-series I/O enclosure.
If the system has no IOAM enclosures and you want system communications with the
OSM Service Connection and OSM Notification Director, the NonStop S-series I/O
enclosure must provide connection for the dedicated service LAN via two Category 6
(CAT 6) Ethernet cables. Category 5e (CAT 5e) cable is also acceptable.
