NonStop Software Essentials Installation and Quick Start Guide

1 Introduction to NonStop Software Essentials
The HP NonStop Software Essentials product is a software installation and management tool for
all NonStop servers running J-series, H-series, and G-series software. NonStop Software Essentials
uses DSM/SCM server software and provides a replacement for DSM/SCM Planner Interface
functions as well as certain Host Maintenance Interface functions that is more secure, easier to use,
and overcomes other shortcomings of DSM/SCM. It coexists with DSM/SCM; you can use either
NonStop Software Essentials or the DSM/SCM Planner Interface for tasks in which there is
overlapping functionality. For more information, see “NonStop Software Essentials as a Replacement
for the Planner Interface” (page 21).
NOTE: The DSM/SCM Planner Interface is not supported on 64-bit system consoles (which
includes NonStop system consoles running Windows 2008 Server), so the NonStop Software
Essentials interface must be used in place of the DSM/SCM Planner Interface on those consoles.
The NonStop Software Essentials user interface is a plug-in to HP SIM (Systems Insight Manager),
which is the common manageability tool for all HP platforms and operating systems. HP SIM is a
heterogeneous multi-OS server and storage management solution that enables the user to monitor
and control HP servers and storage. Support for NonStop servers in HP SIM is rapidly expanding,
with more core HP SIM functionality for NonStop, such as HP Insight Remote Support Advanced
(for remote support services), NonStop-specific plug-ins (including NonStop Cluster Essentials and
NonStop I/O Essentials), and support for NonStop in other HP Essentials products.
In addition to integrating a software management tool for NonStop into the HP SIM environment,
NonStop Software Essentials provides the following enhancements over the DSM/SCM Planner
Interface:
A more user-friendly interface (see “Overview of the Similarities and Differences” (page 21)).
Enhanced security – providing encryption for all data passed to NonStop servers
Enhanced software audit.
Unified request status – NonStop Software Essentials provides consolidated request status,
allowing you to view status from multiple Expand-connected systems. DSM/SCM interfaces
do not show complete status of requests that span several NonStop servers. For example, a
Build/Apply request has four sequential activities, starting on the host system, then on the
target system, and ending back on the host system. Neither host nor target system interface
shows the complete status of activities, even when the host and target are the same system.
For more information on using NonStop Software Essentials, see the online help available from
any NonStop Software Essentials page.
New Features for NonStop Software Essentials 2.1.0
NonStop Software Essentials 2.1.0 includes the following new features:
Viewing Ungrouped Packages has been added to the Host Navigation Pane under the Software
In Archive Node. This is an application-defined group which contains a list of all software
packages in the archive that do not currently belong to any user-defined package group.
The Ungrouped Packages page also provides the ability to manage software package groups,
delete a software package, export files, and request the display of detailed information about
any software package contained in the archive and not currently a member of a user-defined
package group.
Removed $ZTC0 as a default stack. Software Essentials now runs on $ZTCP0 and $ZTCP1
by default. If you are using stacks other then $ZTCP0 and $ZTCP1, add the Stack parameters
in the NSECONF file. If there is a need to ignore the default stacks $ZTCP0 and $ZTCP1, set
