Introduction
Compaq OSI software is the Compaq implementation of the International Standards
Organizations (ISO) seven-layer model for standard network architecture. This model is
the ISO Reference Model for Open Systems Interconnection (OSI). The Compaq Open
Systems Interconnection/Transport Services (OSI/TS) subsystem is the Compaq
implementation of the Transport Layer of the OSI model (Layer 4), and the internet
protocol (IP) and end system to intermediate system (ES-IS) routing exchange protocol
in the Network Layer of the OSI model (Layer 3).
The Compaq OSI/TS subsystem, a standard Compaq access method, allows your
application to establish and use a number of transport connections on both wide area
networks and local area networks. The OSI/TS subsystem controls these connections
for your application and guarantees reliable data transfer between end systems.
The OSI Reference Model specifies a common network environment in which
heterogeneous computer systems can exchange data. It describes a hierarchy of services
that allows applications running in different host systems to communicate across a
network. Systems that implement ISO required services are called open systems.
OSI/TS software provides all required transport services to enable applications running
in Compaq systems to communicate with applications running in other open systems.
This section includes the following topics:
•
An explanation of how OSI/TS relates to the OSI Reference Model
•
A summary of OSI/TS features
•
Descriptions of hardware and software components
•
A brief description of interfaces available to OSI/TS users
•
An overview of network configuration and management tools
•
A summary of programming considerations for NonStop systems
Implemented Standards
Compaq OSI/TS conforms to the reference model for Open Systems Interconnection
(OSI) as defined by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in ISO 7498. This
manual describes the OSI/TS implementation only. For general information on the
protocols, refer to the following standards:
•
Transport Layer (Layer 4)
•
ISO 8072 service definition
•
ISO 8073 protocol specification
•
Network Layer (Layer 3)
•
ISO 8473 1988(E) protocol for providing connectionless-mode network service
