Managing Disk Space Usage
Managing Disk Space Usage
Due to the large amount of disk space required by incident files related to processor
dumps, disk space utilization is an important consideration when you use TFDS:
•
An incident captured by the TFDS monitor might require incident files to be
collected into a subvolume to be used by your service provider for failure analysis.
(For more information, see Files Included in Failure Data Collection on page 1-7.)
•
For a Processor Down incident, a processor dump file and various other support
files are collected.
•
For an incident related to a software failure instrument, other files might be
collected such as a Snapshot file, online processor dump files, and other support
files.
When the TFDS monitor determines that files need to be collected, it chooses a disk
that has sufficient space, which is calculated this way:
•
Disk space required for the files required for processor dump analysis is half the
size of physical processor memory.
•
Disk space required for the Snapshot file is one gigabyte.
•
When the DUMPALLSLICES configuration option is turned ON, the amount of disk
space required for processor dumps increases by a factor of three. This option
should be used with caution, and only when recommended by Support Personnel.
(For more information, see DUMPALLSLICES on page 3-18.)
When choosing a disk volume, the TFDS monitor looks at the volumes specified in the
DUMPVOLUME, ALTERNATE-VOLUMES, and DISALLOWED-VOLUMES lists to
determine where to store the incident files. These criteria are used in selecting the disk
volume:
1. If a volume has been specified with the DUMPVOLUME command, the volume is
selected if there is sufficient space for the files and if there will be at least a
specified percentage of free space left after the files are placed. (The percentage
of free space left can be specified in the TFDSCOM command DUMPVOLUME on
page 3-19.) If the specified volume is a virtual disk, space-checking is not
performed, and the virtual disk is automatically selected.
2. If alternate volumes are allowed, each volume specified in the ALTERNATE-
VOLUMES list is considered if it is not also present in the list of DISALLOWED-
VOLUMES. The TFDS monitor goes through the alternative volume list to select a
volume that has sufficient space for the files and that will have a specified
percentage of free space left over after the files have been placed. If an alternate
volume is a virtual disk, space-checking is not performed, and the virtual disk is
automatically selected.
