Turning Audit Dumping On or Off
Turning Audit Dumping On or Off
When the audit dump capability is turned on for an audit trail and is enabled, TMF
automatically initiates a dump of the audit trail to tape or disk whenever an audit-trail
file becomes full. Audit dumps are necessary for file recovery; they are also necessary
for volume recovery when data volumes use the archive recovery mode.
By default, the audit dump feature is turned on.
There are two ways to turn the audit dump capability on or off:
When initially configuring an audit trail, you can turn audit dumping on or off by
including an AUDITDUMP ON or AUDITDUMP OFF option in the ADD
AUDITTRAIL or ALTER AUDITTRAIL command. (If you do nothing with the audit
dump configuration when you initially configure an audit trail, the default setting,
ON, is used for that audit trail.)
Later, you can include an AUDITDUMP ON or AUDITDUMP OFF option in an
ALTER AUDITTRAIL command to reverse the default or previously configured
setting. To change the AUDITDUMP option to OFF, TMF must be started.
Setting the audit dump value to off for an audit trail means that files in the audit trail are
deleted when they become filled and are no longer needed by TMF. Do not turn off the
audit dump attribute for any audit trail unless you no longer want to retain audit-trail
files for possible TMF recovery operations.
Pausing and Resuming Audit Dumping
When the audit dump feature is turned on for one or more audit trails, you can pause
(disable) or resume (enable) the feature for all audit trails. In emergency situations, the
disable abrupt option allows you to pause audit dumping immediately, without
completing any audit dumps that are currently in progress.
You enable the audit dumping feature by using the ENABLE AUDITDUMP command.
You disable it (in the ordinary way or abruptly) by using the DISABLE AUDITDUMP
command.
Note. If the audit dump capability is off, the level of protection is substantially reduced: TMF
still does volume recovery, but it cannot do file recovery, and online dumps are useless.
Note. The following restrictions apply to turning audit dumping on and off:
If you do not turn on audit dumping for the master audit trail, you cannot turn it on for any
auxiliary audit trail.
You cannot turn audit dumping off for the master audit trail if it is turned on for one or more
auxiliary audit trails.
Before you can enable audit dumping for an audit trail, you must specify one or more
restore volumes for that audit trail.
