BackBox H4.00 User Manual

Appendix CMigration to the BackBox product
206 BackBox H4.00 User Manual
Initial status
The BackPak configuration is assumed completed.
The VTCs, the Data store and the Volume group paired to the DSM/TC, QTOS or TMF
catalogue are configured.
Be sure the Volume group is set for ‘Auto-import’, so volumes expired during the
migration period and requested for a new backup will automatically be registered in
BackPak and processed by BackPak.
A VTC is equipped with physical tape drives, or direct connection to tier-party VTS, to
allow Virtualization, the cloning of legacy media to BackBox virtual volumes.
No volume is yet registered in the BackPak domain for this Volume group.
In this example, it is assumed the legacy tape media are physical media, a VTC is
equipped with an auto-loader and the tape catalogue is TMF.
Step-1: Switch the writing of new backups to BackBox
Prevent any new mount requests for backups
(TMFCOM ALTER AUDITTRAIL …, AUDITDUMP OFF)
Be sure there is no more automatic load by the legacy tape system.
Register in the BackPak domain, all volumes that are currently SCRATCH.
BackPak GUI, Volume tab, choose the “Import from Tape Catalog” page, select the
Volume group and ask for registering only SCRATCH volumes
Allow new mount requests for backups
(TMFCOM ALTER AUDITTRAIL …, AUDITDUMP ON)
Be sure the EMS Extractor is running for the BackPak domain.
Step-2: Migrate the non-expired tape volumes.
Load a batch of legacy physical tapes into the auto-loader
Submit the virtualization of the batch of media in the auto-loader.
BackPak GUI, Volume tab, choose the “Virtualize” page,
enable “Searching in DSM/TC, TMF and QTOS catalogues’,
select the VTC that has the auto-loader, select “All tape drives”,
select the NonStop node where the catalogue is located
Initiated the task
The Virtualization task reports the processing of each volume in EMS
The Virtualization Status can be requested from the Virtualize page
In this Step-2 period, a legacy volume might expire. If it is requested for a new
backup, BackBox should automatically register it and load it.
This special case is reported by the EMS message #3445:
