Configuration

• Data Store name.
• Maximum size of a virtual volume.
• BackBox compression
• Catalog type and name
Not all attributes in a Volume Group definition can be changed once volumes have
been created in this Volume Group.
Maximum volume size, volume class, compression and encryption will take effect
only on volumes loaded for output.
To change un-modifiable Volume Group attribute, the volume must be recreated and
the included volumes deleted and recreated under the new Volume Group.
Special Considerations at Installation
Requirement for the mount request message in EMS
The mount request message issued by $ZSVR in EMS must specify the volume label
to mount, in order to have BackBox automatically mount the requested volume on a
tape drive.
This is especially true when writing a backup where some setups produce a message
asking for a generic SCRATCH volume to the operator. BackBox does not choose the
volume to mount and lets the mount request pending until manual actions solve the
case.
Tape catalogs DSM/TC and TMF chose the SCRATCH volume and identify it in the
mount request.
Tier-party tape catalogs must be configured to generate this mount request.
OBEY files for un-cataloged tape operation must not specify VOLUME SCRATCH in the
TAPE DEFINE, but rather specify a specific volume label.
Recommendation for the TAPE DEFINE
The TAPE or TAPECATALOG DEFINE should not specify any tape drive. This will allow
BackPak to choose a tape drive, providing:
• fail-safe processing when some resources such as a VTC server are
down but other are still up
• load balancing on the available resources
BackPak will choose the appropriate drive if there is a mix of media type, or if a VLE
drive is required for tape encryption.
