TSM Data Stores
This chapter assumes that minimally:
The IBM TSM client has been installed in each VTC, including:
The API run-time
The command-line backup client
The GUI backup client
The connectivity between the VTC and the TSM environment has been tested
outside the BackPak software, by using:
A TSM backup client provided by IBM
The TSM client node-id / password that will be used by the VTC.
The TSM management class to be used by the VTC meets the BackBox
requirements.
TSM server configuration
For a typical Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) configuration, three objects should be
defined on the TSM server: a Storage Pool, a Management Class and a Client Node.
Storage Pool
Disk Storage Pools are recommended for BackBox. When tape media is required, it is
recommended to backup to disk pool and to let normal TSM migration move the data
to tape. It is also recommended to carefully plan restore operations, especially when
the execution of several concurrent restore jobs may be expected: TSM may
consolidate several virtual NonStop volumes on the same physical media limiting its
ability of running several concurrent NonStop RESTORE.
The number of concurrent NonStop backup tasks is limited to the number of physical
tape drives available to the BackBox client (mount points).
An emulated NonStop tape drive has response time limitations that are more
sensitive to long delays more likely to occur when a physical media must be loaded
inside TSM.
Refer to the Tivoli documentation to configure storage pools for the VTCs.
Management Class
The VT Controller stores only “Archive” objects; one or more Management Classes
with Archive Copy Group must be defined for BackBox.
A Management Class defines the backup data retention and names of the Storage
Pool.
