Manual Load and Unload
Unless operational needs require the pre-mount of a tape volume, the preferred
method of operation is detailed below.
The processing of a manual load requires the Domain Manager running on a NonStop
server. Stand-alone loads do not require a Domain Manager and should be reserved
to restore operations in emergency cases. See “Stand Alone Load tab” of the “Web
User Interface” section of this manual for more information.
To Load a Volume
Start the tape application.
Log in to the Domain Manager through the BackPak user interface, using a Guardian
user in the SUPER group.
For a labeled volume: wait until the EMS tape mount request appears in the Home
page of the Web user interface.
For an unlabeled volume: select a volume from the Volume List page and go to
step 5.
Locate the Load button associated to the pending mount request.
Click Load; the configured devices are presented for an optional manual selection of
a device.
A page showing the configured Guardian nodes and virtual devices is presented to
the user who chooses the mount point. The virtual device can be left unspecified to
enable auto-assign processing.
To Unload a Volume
1. Locate the drive in the Home page of the BackPak user interface.
Navigate to the Unload button associated to this drive.
Click Unload; the tape volume is unloaded.
Note that unload will cancel any current operation on the tape device. If a NonStop
tape application writing or reading to or from the tape device, this application will fail
with an IO error.
Refer to the user interface section for more information.
Unlabeled Tapes
Unlabeled tapes are supported by the BackPak environment. This allows the VT
Controller to support existing tape software that expects unlabeled tapes. It is, of
course, impossible to automate the mount of unlabeled virtual volumes. All loads
must be manual.
