67 BackBox H4.00 User Manual
In the BackPak environment, the user must identify each unlabeled volume by a
pseudo-label. This pseudo-label is then used by the BackBox software to catalog and
locate the image of the unlabeled volume.
To Create an Unlabeled Volume
1. Create the virtual volumes with the label type Unlabeled.
Assign a six-character label, along with a descriptive comment, to each unlabeled
volume.
The labels assigned to unlabeled volumes are usually different from those of labeled
volumes in manual operations. Technically, it is possible to have an unlabeled
volume and labeled volume share the same label; the label type allows the software
to distinguish between the two volumes.
At volume load, the user can browse the catalog of unlabeled virtual volumes and
correctly identify the required volume by the applied pseudo-label nomenclature and
comments.
Daily cleanup (OBB017)
Cleanup tasks are collected in the OBB017 Obey file.
BB017_FREE_EXPIRED: Free the storage allocated to newly expired TMF,
DSM/TC or QTOS volumes.
BB023_DEL_BACKEDUP: Delete old Windows files (Windows file Data Stores only)
that are backed up according to the Volume Group’s configuration.
BB022_CHECK_SPACE: Verify the available disk space for Windows Data Stores
and related Volume Groups.
Scheduling
A daily execution of OBB017 is suggested. Each individual task can also be submitted
independently.
Waits for locked records might slow down the OBB017 if scheduled during a time of
high tape activity.
When virtual volumes are cataloged in DSM/TC, the relative execution times of
BB017_FREE_EXPIRED and the DSM/TC Tape files Expiration process should be
considered.
An execution of BB017_FREE_EXPIRED right after the DSM/TC cleanup will show
more accurate DSM/TC catalog status in the GUI, pages Volume list and Volume
Summary.
The GUI Volume Detail page is always up-to-date because DSM/TC, TMF and QTOS
catalogs are always accessed.
An execution of BB017_FREE_EXPIRED right after the DSM/TC cleanup will also clean
sooner expired storage.
