NonStop NS2400 Series Planning Guide

A NonStop NS2400 series system supports up to four rx2800 i4 blade elements configured in
pairs. Because modular hardware provides flexibility in how hardware is distributed in a rack, up
to four blade elements can be installed in a single footprint.
To reduce ambiguity in identifying proper cable connections to the blade element, an identification
convention uses numbers to refer to each connection. A number such as 1, 2, 3, and 4 identifies
each blade element. These IDs reference the appropriate blade element for proper connection of
cables.
Versatile I/O (VIO) Enclosure (DC-Powered)
The 4U VIO enclosure uses -48 volt DC power and provides Gigabit Ethernet networking and
connectivity to the processors. Two VIO enclosures, one required for each ServerNet fabric, are
installed in a 19-inch rack.
For an illustration of the VIO enclosure slot locations, see Figure 39 (page 118).
Each VIO enclosure contains:
Connectivity for up to four processors, configured in pairs.
Connectivity for up to four Storage CLIM CGs configured in pairs and used to communicate
with storage devices such as Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) CG disk enclosures.
Up to eight copper/optical Ethernet ports used for Ethernet connectivity. Additional Ethernet
connectivity is available via IP or Telco CLIM CG connections with up to two IP or Telco CLIM
CGs.
NOTE: For details about connecting to the embedded or optional expanded Ethernet ports
on the VIO enclosure, ask your authorized HP service provider to refer to the Versatile I/O
Manual.
Two fans to provide the cooling for components inside a VIO enclosure.
Two power supplies with universal AC input to provide power to the components in a VIO
enclosure
Storage CLuster I/O Module (CLIM CG or CLIM T)
The Storage CLuster I/O Module (Storage CLIM CG or Storage CLIM T) is a Carrier-Grade version
of the commercial Storage CLIM that is used in Telco or Carrier-Grade environments. The Storage
CLIM connects to the VIO enclosure and functions as a ServerNet adapter through which storage
devices connect to the system.
The Storage CLIM (CLIM CG or CLIM T):
Can connect to these storage devices using a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface for the
storage subsystem via a SAS Host Bus Adapter (HBA):
“SAS Disk Enclosures” (page 109)
“DAT 160 Tape Unit (Optional)” (page 113)
Provides ServerNet fabric connections.
Can coexist with other types of CLIMs in the same system.
Is configured as part of a pair for fault-tolerance.
Connects to the CG maintenance switch using an embedded Ethernet port.
Has a ground connection between the CLIM chassis and the cabinet.
Has a retainer for the cable management arm, which keeps the cable management arm from
moving during a seismic event.
