NonStop NS2400 Series Planning Guide
5 System Configuration Guidelines for NonStop NS2400
Series Systems
This section provides configuration guidelines and configuration restrictions for a NonStop NS2400
commercial system. Configuration restrictions are also described in Chapter 6 (page 99).
Internal ServerNet Interconnect Cabling
This subsection includes:
• “Dedicated Service LAN Cables” (page 84)
• “Cable Product IDs” (page 84)
• “Blade Element to VIO Enclosure” (page 84)
• “Processor ID Assignment for the Blade Element” (page 84)
• “SAS Ports to SAS Disk Enclosures” (page 84)
• “SAS Ports to SAS Tape Devices” (page 85)
• “Fibre Channel Ports to ESS” (page 85)
• “Fibre Channel Ports to Tape Devices” (page 85)
Dedicated Service LAN Cables
The NonStop NS2400 commercial system uses Category 5e (CAT 5e) or Category 6 (CAT 6),
unshielded twisted-pair Ethernet cables for the internal dedicated service LAN and for connections
between the VIO enclosure and the application LAN equipment.
Cable Product IDs
For all NS2400 series system cable lengths and cable product IDs, see “Cable Types, Connectors,
Length Restrictions, and Product IDs” (page 162).
Although a considerable cable length can exist between the modular enclosures in the system, HP
recommends that cable length between each of the enclosures be as short as possible.
Blade Element to VIO Enclosure
Fiber-optic cables provide communication between the ServerNet PCI adapter card in each blade
element and the ServerNet-to-processor ports on the VIO enclosure. The optional Fibre Channel
HBA interfaces on the Storage CLIM provide storage and I/O connectivity and the Ethernet ports
on the VIO enclosure and IP or Telco CLIMs provide high-speed Ethernet links to communication
LANs.
Processor ID Assignment for the Blade Element
Each blade element contains one processor element. The maintenance entity (ME) firmware running
in the VIO enclosure assigns a number to each processor element based on its connection from
the blade element to the ServerNet-to-processor ports in slots 14.1 through 14.4 (processors 0
through 3). Therefore, fiber-optic cable connections from the blade elements to the
ServerNet-to-processor ports on the VIO enclosure determine the processor number of each blade
element.
SAS Ports to SAS Disk Enclosures
SAS disk enclosures can be connected directly to the two HBA SAS ports on a Storage CLIM. The
four SAS disk enclosures connected to DL380 G6 or DL380p Gen8 CLIMs cannot be daisy-chained.
For more information, see “Storage CLIM Devices” (page 85).
