Bit Translation and Character
Substitution
This appendix describes bit translation and character substitution in the character sets
(language sets) provided with the Spooler subsystem. These character sets are used
by countries other than the United States.
Bit Translation
For 7-bit-mode character sets, each character is represented with 7 bits. Thus, there
are 128 characters (128 bit combinations).
For 8-bit-mode character sets, each character is represented with 8 bits. Thus, there
are 256 characters (256 bit combinations).
When an 8-bit-mode character set is translated to a 7-bit-mode character set, only the
first 128 characters of the 256-character set can be supported. The remaining 128
characters (including control characters) cannot be translated and are replaced with
hyphens.
Table A-1 summarizes how 7-bit-mode and 8-bit-mode character sets are specified for
different language sets.
