New Storage Subsystem Option to Enable Fast Cache Bulk Writes
A new attribute, FASTBULKWRITE, is supported.
FASTBULKWRITE specifies whether or not the system is to use Fast Cache Bulk Writes.
FASTBULKWRITE applies only to disks in a Fibre Channel Disk Module (FCDM) or to ESS disks.
For unstructured files, FASTBULKWRITE improves throughput and concurrency for FUP DUP
type operations. For structured files, only concurrency is improved by FASTBULKWRITE since
the throughput optimization is not needed for structured files.
However, FASTBULKWRITE is not always an appropriate option to use, and is therefore set to
OFF by default. Some applications require data integrity for bulk writes even when a failure
occurs; these applications rely on disk writes being forced (unbuffered). Because
FASTBULKWRITE buffers disk writes, the option must not be enabled on volumes being used
by applications that have that requirement.
DSM/Tape Catalog Enhancements
The DSM/Tape Catalog is updated to include the TYPE option for the ALTER TAPEVOLUME
command. This option now allows specifying the type of media or tape that can be used. The
TYPE of a TAPEVOLUME has been modified to allow changing the media type of one or more
tape volumes, regardless of their current status.
The DSM/TC products such as MEDIADBM, MEDIACAT, ZSERVER and TAPEPROCESS
additionally support the following media types on H-Series:
DLTIII
DLTIV
CART9840
DDS
DDS2
DDS3
CART3490
SDLT
LTO1
LTO2
