About This Document This compendium provides categorized information about new features, migration issues, and fallback considerations for H06.18. It also includes references and sources for migration planning. Supported Release Version Updates (RVUs) This manual supports the H06.18 RVU only. Intended Audience This compendium is written for system managers or anyone who needs to understand how migrating to H06.

1 H06.18 Overview This chapter provides an overview of the H06.18 RVU. Major New Features Table 1-1 summarizes the main changes in H06.18. For descriptions of new features, see the appropriate chapters. Table 1-1 Summary of the H06.
Table 1-1 Summary of the H06.18 RVU (continued) Sections and Categories Major New Features Chapter 7: Hardware Products Telco CLIMs supported on NonStop NS16x00 systems Chapter 8: Networking Products • DNS server can run on a CLIM • FTP API enhancements: — — — — Migration Alerts Fallback Alerts X FTPmget() FTMmput() FTPmdelete() FTPOpen() Products Removed From the Site Update Tape (SUT) No products are removed from the SUT at H06.18.
2 Operating System Increased Capacity and Resource Monitoring for the Open System Services (OSS) Environment This RVU introduces new limits for the Open System Services file system. These new limits are approximately four to six times higher than the previous limits. For example: • The maximum number of OSS file opens per processor, previously 12,000, has been raised to 64,000. • The maximum number of pipes per processor, previously 1024, has been raised to 16,000.
3 Application Development Products New HP COBOL Intrinsic Functions HP COBOL supports two new intrinsic functions, TEST-NUMVAL and TEST-NUMVAL-C. These functions test whether a given argument string is a valid input to the existing instrinsic functions NUMVAL and NUMVAL-C, respectively, and return a numeric indicator giving the character position of the first invalid character, or zero to indicate a valid input string.
4 Database and Transaction Processing Products Module File Caching for NonStop ODBC/MX and NonStop JDBC/T4 Drivers The Module File Caching (MFC) feature shares the SQL/MX prepared statement plans among the SQL/MX database connections. It helps in reducing the SQL/MX compilation time during the steady state of the JDBC or ODBC application, thereby reducing resource consumption. MFC uses disk files on the NonStop Open System Services file system for storing the compiled SQL/MX prepared statement plans.
• • • • • The FC command is enhanced in PATHCOM to enable the user to specify a number or string to edit or repeat a command-line. TS/MP 2.4 PATHMON now logs messages to its log files when any of these commands are issued: — ABORT — ADD — ALTER — DELETE — FREEZE — FREEZE — STOP — THAW — START The PDMCOM OPEN command is enhanced to accept domain name. Use this command prior to any domain-level operations. The STATUS DOMAIN command is introduced.
5 Installation and Configuration Products The H06.18 RVU contains no new features for installation and configuration products.
6 Manageability Products Safeguard Enhancements Safeguard supports the following enhancements for the H06.18 RVU: Safeguard Manager Process Runs at High Pin The Safeguard Manager process $ZSMP now runs as a HIGH-PIN process. Previously, $ZSMP ran as a LOW-PIN process by default. Running $ZSMP at HIGH-PIN helps to reduce the total number of LOW-PIN processes running on a system, allowing more processes that have not been converted to use the D-series Guardian APIs to run at LOW-PIN.
OSM Enhancements • • OSM Service Connection, T0682H02^ABU, adds support for CLuster I/O Modules (CLIMs) connected to NonStop NS16x00 systems in a Telco environment. OSM Console Tools, T0632G06^AAU, includes an update to the CLIM Boot Service Configuration to support migrating the DNS server from NonStop System Consoles to designated CLIMs (in addition to the DHCP server).
7 Hardware Products Telco CLIMs Supported on NonStop NS16x00 Telco CLIMs are now supported on NS16x00 systems. Previously, only IP CLIMs were supported, and only on commercial systems.
8 Networking Products DNS Server Can Run on a CLIM As of H06.18, you can have the CLIM provide the Domain Name Server (DNS) in addition to the DHCP service, instead of having the NonStop System Console provide these services. One of the advantages of configuring CLIMs (instead of the NonStop consoles) to run DHCP, TFTP, and DNS servers is that the consoles do not need to have TFTP configured. If your security auditors require that TFTP not be run on the console, you can move these services to the CLIMs.
A Sources for Migration Assistance and Information This appendix describes the assistance HP provides when problems arise during the migration and testing process. HP also provides services that can help you develop a migration plan and implement migration tasks. Most migration and release documentation is available through the HP NonStop Technical Library (NTL).
