About This Document This compendium provides categorized information about new features, migration issues, and fallback considerations for J06.04. It also includes references and sources for migration planning. Disclaimer The information in this publication supersedes the information on the August 2008 Instant Information NonStop Technical Library DVD. Supported Release Version Updates (RVUs) This manual supports the J06.04 RVU only.
The guide provides information for migrating from a previous G-series, H-series, or J-series RVU to the current RVU. HP Encourages Your Comments HP encourages your comments concerning this document. We are committed to providing documentation that meets your needs. Send any errors found, suggestions for improvement, or compliments to docsfeedback@hp.com. Include the document title, part number, and any comment, error found, or suggestion for improvement you have concerning this document.
1 J06.04 Overview This chapter provides an overview of the J06.04 RVU. Major New Features Table 1-1 summarizes the main changes in J06.04. For descriptions of new features, see the appropriate chapters. Table 1-1 Summary of the J06.
For recent product removal information, see the Discontinuation Notices at http:// h20223.www2.hp.com/NonStopComputing/cache/77208-0-0-225-121.aspx. Preparation, Planning, and Migration • • • • • • • • • • 10 If you are migrating from a G-series to a J-series RVU, before you begin migrating applications, contact your HP representative to analyze your applications and identify specific modules and program components that require changes for migration to a J-series RVU.
2 Operating System Enhancements to OSS Thread-Aware I/O Operations The J06.04 RVU introduces new thread-aware APIs for OSS regular files: spt_fcntlz( ) spt_ftruncate64z( ) spt_fsyncz( ) spt_ftruncatez( ) spt_readvz( ) spt_readz( ) spt_writevz( ) spt_writez( ) For OSS regular files, these new APIs block only the calling thread instead of the process if they must wait for an I/O operation to complete, thus improving the throughput of multithreaded applications.
spt_writevz() Although this behavior is not POSIX compliant, it allows for improved performance, and this behavior is the same for both the existing thread-aware and thread-aware non-blocking OSS functions and the new spt_*z functions.
3 Application Development Products Native Inspect Enhancements Memory Leak Detection The following new commands are introduced to support memory leak detection: • SET HEAP-CHECK command • SHOW HEAP-CHECK command • INFO command Enhancement for Debugging Optimized Code The SET ENVIRONMENT command now enables users to turn on a warning if the debugging information generated for optimized code is incomplete.
4 Database and Transaction Processing Products SQL/MX UCASE/UPPER and LCASE/LOWER Enhancement The UCASE/UPPER and LCASE/LOWER functions are enhanced to handle Non-ASCII ISO88591 characters in the European alphabets. Multiple Preprocessor Coexistence Multiple versions of the SQL/MX preprocessor for both C/C++ and COBOL programs can now exist on the same system. Previously, installing a new version of the preprocessor would uninstall the previous version.
5 Installation and Configuration Products New Firmware Products The following CLIM firmware is new in the J06.
6 Manageability Products Measure Changes for CLuster I/O Module (CLIM) Beginning with the J06.04 RVU, Measure monitors CLuster I/O Modules (CLIMs). A CLIM is a rack-mounted device that provides the physical interfaces to I/O devices and networks and connects to the NonStop system by means of two plug-in cards (PICs) that interface to the ServerNet fabric of the NonStop server. CLIMs are used for networking or storage.
— — • I/O Module SAS Disk (a physical representation of each disk drive in the SAS disk enclosure) CLIM-Attached Disks (a logical representation of each CLIM-attached SAS or FC disk) For more information, see the OSM Service Connection User's Guide (also available as online help within the application).
7 Hardware Products CLuster I/O Module (CLIM) The CLuster I/O Module (CLIM) is introduced in the J06.04 RVU. CLIM is a rack-mounted HP ProLiant class server that provides connectivity between the NonStop host system and either the network or storage devices. Six CLIMs are available for the J06.
New Tape Drives to Support Storage CLIM The following tape drives are introduced to support storage CLIM: Drive Type Description Model Number Part Number Spares Part Number DAT160 SAS Dual NEBS (Carrier Grade systems) 5344–2SE 545789–001 545808–001 DAT160 SAS Table Top (Commercial systems) 5344 545790-001 545809-001 These tapes drive are described in the following manuals: • 5344 Tape Drive Installation and User's Guide • 5344–2SE Tape Drive Installation and User's Guide See also the NonStop
Supported CLuster I/O Modules (CLIMs) • Telco CLIM CG • Storage CLIM CG • IP CLIM CG For more information about these CLIMs, see “CLuster I/O Module (CLIM)” (page 21) Minimum/Maximum CLIMs 48 CLIMs (total of all types) in a 16 processor system: • Minimum 1 CLIM for Storage CLIM CG • Minimum 1 CLIM for IP CLIM CG • Minimum 1 CLIM for Telco CLIM CG • Maximum 20 CLIMs for Telco CLIM CG NOTE: For fault tolerance, a minimum of two CLIMs of each type is recommended.
Migration Considerations Applications migrating from NS-series Carrier Grade systems to NonStop Carrier Grade BladeSystems require no source code re-compilation. Executable files run without any modifications. SAS CG Disk Enclosure The J06.04 RVU supports the SAS CG disk enclosure (model M8390-12CG), a DC-powered NEBS Level 3-certified 2U drive enclosure that contains up to 12 SAS drives. For more information, see the NonStop Storage Overview Manual .
8 Networking Products Cluster I/O Protocols (CIP) Cluster I/O Protocols (CIP) is a new I/O subsystem beginning support with J06.04. CIP has a new Subsystem Control Facility (SCF) product module as well as a TACL command line interface that together provide a management interface for I/O protocol configuration. The subsystem supports new networking features such as IP Security (IPSec), TCP/IP, and SCTP (a Telco streaming protocol).
A Sources for Migration Assistance and Information This appendix describes the assistance HP provides when problems arise during the migration and testing process. HP also provides services that can help you develop a migration plan and implement migration tasks. Most migration and release documentation is available through the HP NonStop Technical Library (NTL).
