Replacing Cooling Fans
Replacing Cooling Fans
Each enclosure has two fans, located in slots 25 and 26, on the appearance side of the
enclosure. See Location of Cooling Fans. The fan's speeds are controlled by the power
monitor and control units (PMCUs). The fans are cabled to a PMCU and to each other
through a fan interconnect cable. If one fan fails, the PMCU increases the speed of the
other fan to compensate.

Caution: To avoid damage from overheating, observe the time limit that an
appearance-side door can be open with only one fan running. See Safe Operating
Times With Enclosure Door Open.
Preparation:
A fan can be replaced without powering off the enclosure, but it must be replaced
within the safe operating time. You do not need ESD protection to replace fans.
To replace a fan, you need:
A fan. For the part number, see fan listing in Part Number List for NonStop
S-Series CRUs.
●
A Phillips screwdriver (medium size).●
1 Unpack and inspect the replacement fan. If the fan is damaged, do not install it.
Obtain a replacement.
2 To minimize the time the door is open, have the Phillips screwdriver and a
replacement fan ready before you begin.
Removing A Fan:
The fan can be replaced by using either the OSM Service Connection or the TSM
Service Application.
Note: In OSM, the fans are enabled and disabled by selecting True and False. In
TSM, they are enabled and disabled by selecting Enable and Disable. You can check
the fan state in the Attributes dialog box or on the Attributes tab of the Details pane.
