Replacing External Tape Drive CRUs Online

Replacing External Tape Drive CRUs Online
This procedure describes how to prepare, replace, and resume operations on tape
drives connected to a differential SCSI port on a PMF CRU or IOMF CRU.
For information about tape drives connected to a 6760 ServerNet/DA SCSI
plug-in card (S-PIC), see the 6760 ServerNet/DA manual.
Some tape drives are customer replaceable units (CRUs). Some are field
replaceable units (FRUs). See Definitions and Service Classes of CRUs and
FRUs.
For instructions for removing and installing a tape drive, see the specific tape
drive or tape library manual. See List of Tape Drive Manuals.
Note: On PMF2 CRUs (S7600, S74000, and later) and IOMF 2 CRUs, the
differential SCSI port has an internal SCSI pass-through terminator. On earlier PMF
CRUs (S7000, S7400, S70000, and S72000) and IOMF CRUs, an external SCSI
passthrough terminator is connected between the cable and the differential SCSI port.
See Location of Differential SCSI Port on PMF/IOMF CRU.
Preparation
1 Inspect the replacement tape drive.
Unpack the drive. Look for damage, including bent or broken connector pins.
If the drive is damaged, do not install it. Order a replacement and return the
drive.
2 On 517x and 519x tape drives, check that the boards and firmware are the
minimum acceptable revisions or higher.
See Minimum Hardware/Firmware Revisions for 517x and 519x
Replacement Tape Drives.
3 If the replacement tape drive has a different model number than the existing
drive, verify that the new drive is supported on the system and the port. See
the manual for the replacement tape drive in List of Tape Drive Manuals for
the hardware and software requirements.
Replacement
3 Stop the tape drive using OSM, TSM, or SCF.
4 Remove and replace the tape drive using the instructions in the tape drive or
tape library manual. See List of Tape Drive Manuals.
