HP Integrity Servers with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 Release Notes v7.1

System Registry
System will not boot when system hive limit is reached
Issue The Windows Server 2008 Itanium Edition operating system has a system hive
limit of 32 MB (for all Service Packs). For most customer configurations, this limit
is unlikely to be reached. However, in certain circumstances, particularly for
customers with very large configurations or a large number of SAN disks
incorporating multipath MPIO technology, the 32 MB limit is reachable, and can
cause the system to fail to boot when restarted.

Workaround Use either of the following workarounds:
Migrate to Windows Server 2008 R2. This issue is resolved in Windows
Server 2008 R2.
For Windows Server 2008 with SP2, HP and Microsoft have worked together
to create methods of proactive notification and avoidance in case the system
hive approaches its 32 MB limit.
The HP Registry Monitor Agent monitors the size of the System hive and
proactively notifies the user when the system hive is near the maximum limit.
The notification is sent to any configured management station or the Windows
System Event log. It generates a warning when the size is greater than 24
MB and an error when the system hive has grown to 28 MB.
Download the HP Registry Monitor Agent from http://www.hp.com/

NOTE: Before upgrading a server from Windows Server 2008 to Windows
Server 2008 Service Pack 2, use the agent or provider to the verify the size of
your existing system hive. If you see a warning or error message, you must install
the Microsoft QFEs KB973816 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973816) and
KB973817 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973816) . You can find more
