Using the scan tool
The scan tool is a software inventory tool deployed by SMS and targets servers within the SMS
environment. The scan tool performs automated, periodic scans of SMS clients for installed and missing
software, firmware, and ProLiant and Integrity Support Pack updates.
The scan tool uses information available from the HP catalog to determine the state of the system. It
reports to the SMS server that a software update is compliant if the installed version is compliant up to the
current version of component. The scan tool reports "Requested" depending on the scan tool mode
selected.
NOTE: Running the scan tool on an unsupported server will generate an error code. See "Troubleshooting
(on page 69)" for more information.
Scan tool command line syntax
The scan tool has command line parameters that configure how the scan tool audits the servers, creating
an inventory of missing and available HP components. The scan tool command line is:
hpscan.exe /proliant:ProLiantCatalog /integrity:IntegrityCatalog
/scan:ScanList /mode:Mode /scantype:ScanType /result:Result
Command line parameter Description
ProLiantCatalog (required)
This entry specifies the name and location of the
HP ProLiant catalog data file for the scan process.
Depending on the server platform, either
ProLiantCatalog or IntegrityCatalog is
required for the scan tool to run properly.
IntegrityCatalog
(required)
This entry specifies the name and location of the
HP Integrity catalog data file for the scan process.
Depending on the server platform, either
ProLiantCatalog or IntegrityCatalog is
required for the scan tool to run properly.
ScanList (required)
This entry specifies the name and location of the
Component List XML file for the scan process. This
XML file contains two lists of components, the scan
list and the exclude list. Components and support
packs listed in the scan list are scanned by the
scan tool, and components and support packs
listed in the exclude list are excluded from the scan
process. The scan list file should only be modified
by HP.
Mode (optional)
This optional entry defines the output mode of the
scan tool. The scan tool runs in "Latest" mode if no
entry is specified. The following entries are valid:
Latest—Only reports the status for the latest
version of the component
Applicable—Reports the status for all versions
of the applicable component
All—Report "Requested" for all components
