Snapshots and Remote Copy
SAN/iQ snapshots of QLogic mounted SAN/iQ volumes
SAN/iQ snapshots of QLogic mounted volumes function and are supported in
exactly the same way they do for physical servers either booting from the SAN
or accessing raw disks on the SAN. Ensure that a snapshot volume is
appropriately assigned a volume list with the QLogic iSCSI HBA’s
Authentication Group. This volume may then be viewed, enabled, and bound
in the QLogic SANsurfer.
Windows VSS snapshots of QLogic mounted SAN/iQ volumes
Windows VSS Hardware based snapshots
are very useful in a Windows
environment. The Microsoft VSS
Framework provides the capability for a
requestor application (Backup
Application) which supports VSS to
request a backend storage provider to
take a quiesced data consistent point in
time snapshot copy. Applications such as
NTFS, SQL Server, Exchange provide
writers which quiesce the application and
provide point in time application aware
references to this point in time snapshot.
LeftHand Networks’ Windows Solution Pack provides the LeftHand VSS
Hardware Provider which provides the interface to the LeftHand SAN/iQ
clustered and virtualized iSCSI volumes. Microsoft Windows 2003 SP1 is a
minimum requirement to support the VSS Framework. Microsoft Patch
913648 enables transportable snapshots on Windows 2003 Standard. The
Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service is also required to provide connection to the
VSS Framework.
