Preface The HP Insight Recovery 6.0 User Guide contains information on installation, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting HP Insight Recovery 6.0. Publishing history The latest publication date and part number indicate the current edition. Table 1 Publishing History Publication Date Part Number Edition Changes February 2010 5992–5073 1 This is the initial release of the HP Insight Recovery 6.
1 Overview HP Insight Recovery is the recovery management component of HP Insight Dynamics that provides disaster recovery protection for logical servers configured and managed by the HP Insight Dynamics Virtualization Manager. Logical servers that are included in an HP Insight Recovery configuration are referred to as DR Protected logical servers. A DR Protected logical server can run on a physical machine (C-class blade), or on a virtual machine hosted by a hypervisor.
Table 1-1 The HP Insight Recovery configuration process Step Description 1 The local and remote sites are defined in this step, including naming the sites, designating Central Management Servers (CMS) and assigning Primary Site and Recovery Site roles. 2 The local and remote Storage Management Servers are configured in this step. These servers manage Storage Replication Groups at local and remote sites respectively. 3 The Storage Replication Group information is configured in this step.
2 Installing and configuring HP Insight Recovery Installation and configuration overview The following HP Insight Recovery installation and configuration overview includes links to information on each step in the process. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Confirm that all HP Insight Recovery installation and configuration prerequisites have been met — see “Installation and configuration prerequisites” (page 11) for more information.
1. 2. 3. Select an EVA Storage Management Server and click on Edit. Update the user name for the Storage Management Server. Check the Refresh SIM Password box and click on Save. Uninstall instructions Use the Windows® Add/Remove Programs feature as follows: 1. 2. Select Insight Recovery, then click Remove. Wait until the HP Insight Recovery product no longer shows in the list. Networking setup It is assumed that networking links are present between the Primary Site and the Recovery Site.
Storage setup HP Insight Recovery depends on storage array replication, for example Continuous Access EVA Disaster Recovery Groups, to enable failover of logical servers. It is assumed that storage replication links are present between the Primary Site and the Recovery Site. To setup HP Insight Recovery Storage Replication Groups, complete the following tasks: 1.
NOTE: For information on storage setup of cross technology logical servers (logical servers capable of being VC hosted or VM hosted), refer to Enabling Fluid Movement of Workloads Across Dissimilar Servers (p2v, v2p, p2p’) with HP Insight Dynamics 6.0 available at: http:// www.hp.com/go/insightrecovery NOTE: For a list of supported storage, refer to the HP Insight Software 6.0 Support Matrix available at: http://www.hp.
NOTE: Do not activate the recovery logical servers at this time. During the HP Insight Recovery configuration process, the recovery logical servers will be further configured in the configuration import process at the Recovery Site - there will be an opportunity to activate and deactivate the recovery logical servers at this time.
NOTE: Before attempting to configure HP Insight Recovery, ensure that all DR Protected Primary Site logical servers are deactivated and all Storage Replication Groups have been failed over to the Recovery Site - this was done in “ Recovery Site logical server setup” (page 14). 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 16 From the Sites tab, configure the Primary Site. From the Storage Management Servers tab, configure storage management servers at the Primary Site.
3 Testing and failover operations This chapter contains sections on testing Recovery Groups, planned failovers and unplanned failovers using the Change local site to Primary Site and Change local site to Recovery Site operations.
Failover operations This section explains the difference between planned and unplanned failovers, and provides the procedure to follow in either case. Planned failover A planned failover typically involves an expected outage at the Primary Site. For example, a planned failover might be necessary to perform scheduled maintenance, or to react to a severe weather forecast. It can also be used for testing purposes.
HP Insight Recovery is able to prevent split-brain from occurring during an unplanned failover, by regulating the auto-power configuration of managed nodes (whether virtual or physical) that are assigned to DR Protected logical servers so that they do not automatically power up after an outage. If, for example, the Primary Site loses power and site failover is invoked, the original Primary Site will not resume running the DR Protected logical servers when power is restored.
4 Issues, limitations and suggested actions Issues and limitations of this release are listed below. The following categories are used: Limitations Limitations of the implemented functions and features of this release. Major issues Issues that may significantly affect functionality and usability in this release. Minor issues Issues that may be noticeable but do not have a significant impact on functionality or usability.
• • • • the Primary and Recovery Sites, hence the MAC address for a primary logical server and the corresponding recovery logical server will be different. HBA WWN — For a VC hosted logical server, the HBA WWN address is assigned by Virtual Connect or Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager. Disjoint address ranges must be used at the Primary and Recovery Sites, hence the WWN for a primary logical server and the corresponding recovery logical server will be different.
5 Troubleshooting This chapter is divided into four sections containing information on: • HP Insight Recovery configuration troubleshooting • Troubleshooting Change local site to Primary Site and Change local site to Recovery Site operations • Troubleshooting using the HP Insight Recovery Jobs display • HP Insight Recovery log files Configuration troubleshooting To troubleshoot HP Insight Recovery configuration operations, take note of any on-screen error messages, then review this section for relevant inf
— — 24 The LSM service was not running when Recovery Groups were configured in HP Insight Recovery. The logical server was being actively managed when the HP Insight Recovery configuration was invoked (logical server modification, logical server activation, or logical server deactivation was in progress). • No configuration operation can be run Possible causes include: — A Change local site to Primary Site or Change local site to Recovery Site operation is in progress.
Error message Error: Failed to add/modify EVA Storage Management Server. Credential for Storage Management Server does not exist. Check input and retry. Cause The hostname, port number, and user name specified cannot be validated. Action Ensure that the server identified by the hostname is an EVA Command view server. Ensure that CIMOM on the Command View server is configured to use the port number specified and that the user name specified is a valid user on that server.
Error message Unable to run Insight Recovery operations because Insight Recovery Job is in progress or another Insight Recovery configuration operation is in progress. Cause If a Change local site to Primary Site or Change local site to Recovery Site operation is in progress then no configuration operation will be allowed, because the Job is in progress. If an HP Insight Recovery configuration operation is in progress, no other HP Insight Recovery configuration operations will be allowed.
Operation of type recovery → primary to denote that the original Recovery Site will become the Primary Site upon completion of the failover. as shown in the Jobs screen below: NOTE: The corresponding Job to change the original Primary Site to become the Recovery Site is initiated by clicking on the Change local site to Recovery Site button. NOTE: The role of a site in HP Insight Recovery is not changed until a site Job has completed.
Now go to the Sites tab and re-initiate the failed Change local site to... operation. For example, for a failed Site failover this would be Change Local site to Primary Site, as shown below: NOTE: Rerunning the Job will only retry Sub Jobs that previously failed; servers associated with completed Jobs or Sub Jobs are already up and running and will not be impacted. Wait for the Job to complete.
• Failover job failed because storage failover failed Possible causes include: — Storage Management Servers were not available at the time of the failover. • Failover job succeeded but recovery logical servers are not activated. Possible causes include: — Recovery Groups containing logical servers that are in Maintenance Mode at the Recovery Site.
