Introduction Upgrading logical servers from ID-VSE 40 or 4.1 to Insight Dynamics 6.0 occurs automatically when you upgrade Insight Dynamics using the Insight Software 6.0 distribution media. The expectation is that logical servers will transition without any further configuration or setup after the upgrade completes. To verify the transition, there are steps that HP recommends you take before and after the upgrade process.

To build a list of the logical servers in your environment, capture the output from the following two commands entered at the command prompt: mxcollection –lf “Active Logical Servers” mxcollection –lf “Inactive Logical Servers” The mxcollection commands output an xml file.

After Upgrading Insight Dynamics After you upgrade Insight Software products (including Insight Dynamics, Insight Control virtual machine management, and Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager) using the Insight Software 6.0 distribution media, there are several additional upgrade steps that you must perform before you can use logical servers. 1. 2. hardware. This is a change from previous releases. Configure VMware vCenter settings To configure Systems Insight Manager to have connectivity with your VMware vCenter server, follow these steps: 1. Click the All Systems link in the left navigation panel to ensure that the vCenter server is discovered. If that server is not listed, create a discovery task to discover it. 2.

• Check to make sure that there are no missing logical servers (logical servers that were not upgraded). • Verify that the underlying resources for any active logical servers still exist in the VM host or enclosure. • Check that the state (active or inactive) of each logical server is correct. The lsmutil – list command shows the details, including the state, of all active and inactive logical servers.

For a server with Virtual Connect logical server, verify: • • Serial number Physical UUID of the server blade Check for inoperable logical servers After the upgrade to Insight Dynamics 6.0, some logical servers might be Inoperable. This can occur if the upgrade process encountered problems. Important: An inoperable logical server was not upgraded. You cannot perform operations on an inoperable logical server other than delete and unmanage.

Correcting inoperable logical server issues • If the upgrade process is still running, wait until the upgrade is complete and check the resource state again. • If the upgrade is complete, the resource managed by the logical server may not be available. In many cases the next automatic refresh of Insight Control virtual machine management (VMM) or Virtual Connect resources corrects the problem. You can perform a manual refresh by using the Tools -> Logical Servers -> Refresh... menu selection.

To correct these problems, you may have to reset your hosts after an upgrade. The following sections provide links to more information. Upgrading an imported Virtual Connect logical server with an unassigned network becomes inoperable If you are upgrading your CMS from Insight Dynamics - VSE 4.1 to Insight Dynamics 6.0 or 6.0 Update 1, a Virtual Connect logical server that was imported (not created) in version 4.1 and contains an unassigned network will be inoperable after the upgrade.

From HP SIM, select Virtualization Manager from the Tools menu, and view the Logical Server perspective. Delete the selected logical server using the Delete -> Unmanage Logical Server... menu selection. After the unmanage operation completes, import the logical server. From the Physical and Virtual perspective, select the logical server, then select Tools -> Logical Servers -> Import, and complete the import operation.
