Executive summary
HP Insight Orchestration software is a powerful new
extension to the HP Insight Dynamics – VSE suite for
ProLiant servers. In this paper, we explore how HP
Insight Orchestration builds on the capabilities of HP
Insight Dynamics – VSE to automate the provisioning
and repurposing of IT infrastructure.
HP Insight Orchestration enables your IT organization
to provision infrastructure consistently and automati-
cally from pools of shared resources using a self-
service portal. You can rapidly provision resources
ranging from a single virtual machine to complex
multi-tier environments with physical and virtual servers
and storage systems.
HP Insight Orchestration helps your IT organization
deliver resources to the business in less time, make
better use of equipment and staff, and increase sys-
tem reliability and consistency through standardization
and automation.
The infrastructure
provisioning challenge
For IT teams, infrastructure provisioning can be both
time-consuming and resource-draining. Each time a
business unit, application owner, or development
team requests resources, a lengthy process begins.
IT experts have to capture system requirements,
design the solution from scratch, and then identify
the resources that are currently available and those
that need to be procured.
After that, the management approval process begins—
and brings all the inevitable time lags and phone
calls as the request moves through the appropriate
approval channels. Once a request is approved, the
work of multiple specialists—including people who
focus on physical servers, virtual servers, networks,
and storage systems—must be coordinated to put the
services into place.
Meanwhile, the people who need to put the infrastruc-
ture to work are locked into a waiting game. Their work
can progress no faster than the speed of the labor-
intensive processes that provision the infrastructure—
processes that can easily take weeks to complete.
Consistency can also suffer in a world of manual
provisioning. When different people are involved in
manual tasks, things are rarely done the same way
twice. Configuration mistakes can lead to delays and
downtime. And then there’s the problem with valuable
IT resources that are under-utilized. This is often the
case when a project—such as a test and develop-
ment effort—concludes. If there isn’t a systematic way
to re-provision them, the resources associated with the
project are likely to sit idle.
