Technical white paper | SPM Adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX Introduction The HP Matrix Operating Environment includes an HP Storage Provisioning Manager (SPM) adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX storage. SPM is a bundled solution for managing storage provisioning within the Matrix Operating Environment. SPM provides out-of-the-box support for selected HP storage solutions and can be extended to other storage (including third party storage) via custom SPM adapters.

Technical white paper | SPM Adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX Figure 1 depicts a typical deployment setup: Figure 1: A typical deployment setup Limitations  Creating a new volume with a given RAID requires pre-configuration of a storage pool setting instance by the EMC storage administrator. Generally, this can be done by creating a volume of that RAID through EMC native tools (SMC or SYMCLI).

Technical white paper | SPM Adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX Installation When the Matrix Operating Environment is installed from the Insight Management DVD, the HP SPM adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX will be installed under the SPM install path (C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\Storage Provisioning Manager\EMCSymmVMAX). The administrator doing the installation has the option to exclude the installation of the adapter (for example, if the environment does not contain EMC storage).

Technical white paper | SPM Adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX Uninstall Before uninstalling the HP SPM adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX component, it is advised to perform following steps as applicable: • Deactivate SPM services that are bound to resources on the EMC storage. • Remove the EMC Symmetrix VMAX array from the SPM catalog if it is already imported. This is required to avoid any errors in SPM as it invokes the adapter to perform RefreshResources operations on the imported array objects.

Technical white paper | SPM Adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX Upgrade Upgrading the HP SPM adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX is handled through the higher version of the Insight Management DVD. For example, when the 7.2 or 7.3 DVD is used to upgrade an Insight Management 7.1 environment (the 7.1 version of the Matrix OE included a technology preview of the HP SPM adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX).

Technical white paper | SPM Adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX The storage administrator will have decided the appropriate degree of sharing for the EMC array (perhaps Matrix is using a specific subset of director ports), and ensured appropriate physical connectivity from the Virtual Connect modules through the SAN to the appropriate director ports. These ports need to be configured for the SPM adapter through the EmcSymmetrixVMaxAdapter.exe.

Technical white paper | SPM Adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX Note In 7.2.x, when the VSA flag is enabled, a volume being presented should have a LUN number assignment value in the range 1-7. See the note in the earlier Limitations section for more details. Typically, the setting of flags on one or more ports is done by the EMC administrator using EMC native tools (SMC or SYMCLI).

Technical white paper | SPM Adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX Creating Thin Volume On the EMC Symmetrix VMAX array, a thin volume is always created on a thin pool. A thin pool is normally created for a specific RAID level. The SPM adapter doesn’t create a thin pool, hence it is required that the storage administrator create a thin pool for a given RAID using EMC native tools (SMC, SYMCLI).

If the EMC choice is not shown, refer to the Troubleshooting section for possible issues and suggested actions. • Provide the SMI-S credentials for the EMC Symmetrix VMAX array management server (host, port, and user may have been specified in the adapter configuration file, but password is always required) and click the “Next” button shown in Figure 4.

Based on desired use, the Matrix/SPM solution may only be using a subset of the available EMC storage pools. Note Storage pools imported can be used by Matrix/SPM; do not import pools (or volumes) that you do not intend for use by Matrix/SPM.

Technical white paper | SPM Adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX • SPM will invoke the adapter to retrieve the volumes from the selected storage pools. When the operation is completed, the list of volumes will be displayed on the “Import Volumes” wizard window. Select the volumes to be imported into SPM catalog and click the “Next” button. Note The volumes to be imported would have been created using the EMC interfaces. When storage requests are made to SPM they can be fulfilled using these volumes.

Technical white paper | SPM Adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized This error may occur while the SPM adapter is sending a request to the EMC Symmetrix VMAX array management server. • Possible Cause: – This error may occur if the given username or password is invalid. • Suggested Action: – Retry the operation with valid username and password.

One of the following actions would resolve the issue: • Select a volume from the concrete pool (SYMMETRIX++C+) to grow up to the required capacity. The selection of grow volume on a concrete pool shown in Figure 10 would successfully meet the requirement.

Technical white paper | SPM Adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX Figure 12: Required to use a thick volume Specified target ports cannot be used for presentation This error would be seen in the SPM GUI and/or in the SPM logs. • Possible Cause: – The requested director port(s) might not have been configured for use by SPM when performing LUN presentations. • Suggested Actions: – Contact the EMC administrator and configure the allowed director port(s) in the EmcSymmetrixVMaxAdapter.exe.

Technical white paper | SPM Adapter for EMC Symmetrix VMAX The LUN value is invalid because VSA is enabled • Possible Cause: – When a VSA enabled port is used while presenting a LUN, the given LUN number (in hexadecimal value) is not valid or not in sequence: • The decimal numbers assigned for LUN numbers are converted into corresponding hexadecimal values. EMC expects these values to be in sequence while presenting multiple LUNs to the same host.
