Introduction Upgrading logical servers from ID-VSE 4.0 to 4.1 occurs automatically when you upgrade VSE. The expectation is that logical servers will transition without any further configuration or setup after the upgrade completes. To verify the transition, there are steps that HP recommends you take before and after the upgrade process.

Figure 1 HP SIM System and Event Collection To build a quick list of just the logical servers in your environment, capture the output from the following two commands entered at the command prompt: mxcollection –lf “Active Logical Servers” mxcollection –lf “Inactive Logical Servers” These commands output an xml file. The xml file does not show the hosts, but if your environment has many logical servers, using these commands is a quick way to obtain the information for your inventory file.

Figure 2 Summary screen If there are no errors shown in the summary screen or the log file, create a second inventory of the logical servers environment in the same way that you created an inventory before the upgrade. IMPORTANT: Carefully verify that the logical servers transitioned properly and are now hosted on their target hosts as expected. ID–VSE 4.1 includes the LSMUTIL (logical server management utility) command.

Solutions to Potential Problems If your logical servers did not transition properly, you may see the following issues: • After reactivating an existing virtual machine logical server, the logical server may not be activated on its pre-upgrade assigned host. • There may not be any Logical Server Platform Types selectable when you create a logical server, or only a subset of the expected types. Based on the type of host that is having problems, you may have to perform further configuration.

After reconfiguring your host, if the logical server is still not activated, delete the logical server and select the Recoverable Logical Server Definition Deletion option, then reimport it. See the following section for more information. Reimporting a Logical Server If the steps in the preceding section do not reset your logical server, and your logical server has an installed operating system, try reimporting the logical server.

In ID–VSE 4.1, the format contains the logical server name embedded within the HP SIM name. For example: Test_VM_LS2 (lsazkoesx05_vsels_test_vm_ls2) Figure 9 Logical server names in ID-VSE 4.1 VM Displayed Without Association in Virtualization Manager Perspectives after Deactivation When you deactivate a virtual machine logical server, the virtual machine is unregistered from the VM host. The virtual machine is then displayed without an association in Virtualization Manager perspectives.

Target Selection Flexibility In ID-VSE 4.1, the target selection screen makes it easier to determine which target hosts are valid for the logical server, and more clearly explains why the rejected hosts were not appropriate for the logical server.

LSMUTIL Database Utility ID-VSE includes LSMUTIL, which can be invoked from the command prompt. This new utility allows you to quickly and easily create a consolidated list for much of the information found in the logical servers graphical user interface. Figure 12 LSMUTIL – – LIST is a consolidated subset of the GUI The LSM Utility also allows for some basic database functionality, allowing you to delete the logical server database or to create a new clean copy of the database.
