HP Matrix Operating Environment 7.3 Update 1 Installation and Configuration Guide for Provisioning with Virtual Resources

1 Overview
The HP Matrix Operating Environment provides an integrated graphical environment for managing
physical servers, logical servers, virtual machines, server blades, nPartitions, virtual partitions,
applications, and workloads. This document provides Matrix OE setup and installation instructions
specifically in support of virtual machine management. To support physical server provisioning
with Matrix OE on HP BladeSystem with Virtual Connect, install and configure a more complete
Matrix OE environment with the HP Installation and Startup Service (not covered in this document).
Matrix OE as configured in this guide also forms the basis of a combined private and public cloud
provisioning platform. Public cloud bursting is a feature that enables enterprises to provision public
and private infrastructure resources in a seamless way. Once configured as described in this guide
you may optionally continue on to integrate the environment to a public cloud partner. You'll find
a list of additional documentation resources, including the public cloud partner configuration, at
the end of this section.
This guide makes use of a typical example hardware configuration as a baseline for describing
the proper process for setup and configuration. The example hardware configuration referenced
throughout the guide includes a Central Management Server (CMS), optional server blades, network
and storage infrastructure, virtual environment management servers, and pre-existing hypervisor
hosts. Note that your hardware environment might vary significantly from these examples. The
environment into which Matrix OE will be integrated may also include pre-existing server deployment
platforms such as HP Server Automation or HP Insight Control server deployment.
This guide assumes you have configured a single management network that provides communications
to the managed elements of the environment. You may have more than one management network
and need to specify the appropriate network depending on the context. However, it is not necessary
for the CMS to have network access to all the same networks that are defined on your hypervisors.
It is usually only necessary to reach the hypervisor’s management console and optionally one
management network to any virtual machines you wish to proactively manage.
The process described in this guide also assumes that some infrastructure services are supplied
and those connection points and references will be identified in context. The instructions in this
guide require you to have knowledge of the following:
Windows Server administration fundamentals
Windows user account and group creation, modification, and membership
VMware ESX/ESXi, vCenter Server, and Microsoft SCVMM and Hyper-V hypervisor installation
and configuration
Creating and managing virtual machine templates and related virtual resources
Networking concepts as required by the target environment
HP Matrix Operating Environment setup and installation overview
The solution requires the installation and setup of the CMS and Matrix Operating Environment
software, and the licensing and registration of managed hypervisor hosts.
To ensure a successful installation, you must install and set up the software in a particular manner.
Even if you have already performed some of the steps in this guide, review the steps to make sure
you correctly installed each component.
