fully-populated rack of server or other IT equipment. Warmed air is then channeled into the side-
mounted MCS unit, cooled, then re-circulated to the front of the server stack. The special horizontal
air flow of the HP Modular Cooling System fully supports this widespread cooling principle and
distributes cooled air uniformly throughout the complete height of the enclosure (i.e., all devices
receive adequate and evenly distributed cool air regardless of their mounting position within the
enclosure).
Product Purpose
The HP MCS is a supplemental cooling system for the data center. Designed as a pre-installed
cooling option on an HP 10000 G2 Series rack enclosure, the HP MCS integrates with a facility’s
chilled water plant or a dedicated chilled water loop to provide dedicated cooling of servers and
other IT equipment. HP recommends that a dedicated cooling loop is installed to supply the HP
MCS. The system provides cooling, recirculation and condensation management, and requires a
small amount of AC electric power. The HP MCS delivers cool air to the front of a rack-mounted
server or equipment stack, then captures and re-cools warm air exhausted from the rear of the
components. This warm air is collected by the fan module and cooled by the system’s air–to-water
heat exchanger module and continually circulated through internal distribution fans. The fans
continually circulate the air and are capable of providing as much air flow as the rack mounted
components will require. Internal monitoring and control sensors assure server inlet air set points
are achieved, and provide constant performance feedback via local and network interfaces.

Designed for use in a modern data center environment, the controlled airflow within the enclosure
requires certain conditions of the water flow and temperature for the removal of heat generated by
equipment. The HP MCS is designed to be operated with both the front and rear doors of the
cabinet closed. This ensures the maximum amount of cooled air is retained within the system,
making it available to the front of the rack mounted equipment. All open areas of the 19-inch
