transfer over the network. If required, the encapsulated data can also be encrypted for transfer
over an insecure network.
iSNS Internet Storage Name Service. Used for discovery and management of IP-based SANs.
J
jumbo frame A large IP frame used in high-performance networks to increase performance over long distances.
Jumbo frames are typically 9,000 bytes for GbE, but can refer to anything over the IP MTU (1,500
bytes on an Ethernet).
L
LIP Loop Initialization Process. The initialization process in an arbitrated loop that occurs when the
loop is powered up or a new device is added. One function of a LIP is to assign addresses. All
data transmission on the loop is suspended during a LIP.
loopback A diagnostic tool that routes transmit data through a loopback connector back to the same adapter.
LUN Logical Unit Number. Representation of a logical address on a peripheral device or array of
devices.
M
MAC address Media Access Control address. A unique hardware device identifier used in IP address assignment.
management
information base
See MIB.
MD5 Message-Digest algorithm 5. A widely used, partially insecure cryptographic hash function with
a 128-bit hash value. An MD5 hash is typically expressed as a 32–digit hexadecimal number.
MGMT Managment.
MIB Management Information Base. A set of guidelines and definitions for SNMP functions.
MTU Maximum Transmission Unit. The size (in bytes) of the largest packet that a specified layer of a
communications protocol can transfer.
N
NTP Network Time Protocol. Used for distributing the Coordinated Universal Time by synchronizing
the clocks of computer systems over data networks.
NVRAM Non-Volatile Random Access Memory. A type of memory that retains data even when power is
removed. Holds configuration settings. You can configure NVRAM settings manually or restore
them from a file.
O
OEM Original Equipment Manufacturer.
P
path A path to a device is a combination of an adapter port instance and a target port as distinct from
internal paths in the fabric network. A fabric network appears to the operating system as an
opaque network between the initiator and the target.
PCI Peripheral Component Interface/Interconnect.
PCM Power and Cooling Module
PDU Protocol Data Unit.
ping A computer network administration utility used to test whether a specified host is reachable across
an IP network, and to measure the round-trip time for packets sent from the local host to a
destination computer.
point-to-point Also FC-P2P. Two Fibre Channel nodes directly connected (not in a loop).
port An access point in a device where a link attaches.
