HP StoreEver MSL8048 and MSL8096 Tape Libraries Getting Started (AK382-96027, December 2012)

7 Installing tape drives
The library can hold up to four tape drives. The tape
drives are numbered from the bottom of the library up.
Locate the drive bay for the tape drive. If this is the
first tape drive in the library, install the tape drive in
the lowest drive bay. Install each additional tape drive
directly above a full-height tape drive or above a
half-height drive/half-height cover pair, as shown.
NOTE: Only install half-height tape drives in
the locations shown. The library does not have
internal connectors in the upper half of the drive
bays; tape drives installed in those locations will
not be operational.
If you are installing the library with the library
extender, leave the lowest drive bay open for
the extender and install the first tape drive in
the next higher drive bay. If the lowest drive
bay has a tape drive installed, loosen the blue
thumbscrews, remove the tape drive, and
reinstall it in a higher drive bay.
Remove one drive bay cover for a half-height tape
drive or two drive bay covers for a full-height tape
drive. Slide the tape drive into the bay until it is firmly
seated. Tighten the blue thumbscrews with your fingers
to secure the tape drive.
8a Planning the parallel SCSI configuration
If you are unfamiliar with configuring parallel SCSI
devices, read the parallel SCSI configuration
information in the user and service guide.
Follow these general guidelines when planning the
parallel SCSI configuration:
The tape drive is an Ultra320 parallel SCSI
device. Only attach one tape drive per Ultra320
bus. Attaching a tape drive on a lower
performance bus may degrade its performance.
Do not connect an LTO tape drive to an SE SCSI
bus because it will seriously degrade
performance.
Avoid attaching the library to the same parallel
SCSI bus as a disk drive or SE device.
The default SCSI ID for all tape drives is 4.
8b Planning the SAS configuration
The server must have a SAS HBA with an external
connector.
WARNING! Only HP SAS RAID controllers
are supported for use with the library. For
supported controllers, see the EBS compatibility
matrix at:
http://www.hp.com/go/ebs
CAUTION: High quality SAS cables rated at
the transfer rate of the SAS components are
required. Always verify that the SAS cable you
are using is rated for the data transfer speed of
the interface of your components. SAS cables
described as "equalized" may not support 6
Gb/s data rates and should not be used with
LTO-5 or LTO-6 tape drives unless these cables
are verified for 6 Gb/s data rates.
