MSL2024 and MSL4048 Tape Libraries - Addendum (AH169-96002, November 2006)

SNMP support
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) allows applications such as HP Systems Insight Manager
(http://www.hp.com/products/SystemInsightManager) to manage the Tape Library. The Library supports
both SNMP conguration and SNMP tags. See the documentation for Insight Man ager or your
management application for information on how to use SNMP.
The Tape Library uses the HP NetCitizen MI B, which is supported by HP Systems Insight Manag er (SIM)
and other applications. When using HP SIM, the device can be detected automatically if SIM detection is
congured.WithHPSIM5.0SP5,thedevicewillbecongured as a generic host and can be identied
manually. Future versions of HP SIM will automatically identify the device as a tape library.
SNMP can onl
ybecongured with the RMI Conguration > Network page; it cannot be congu red
with the OCP (see Figure 1).

To congure SNMP with the RMI:
1. Select the SNMP Enabled box.
2. Enter the IP addresses for up to three computers running SNMP management software.
3. Click Submit.
Automatic cleaning
When
auto clean is enabled, the Tape Library automatically loads a cleaning cartridge when a tape drive
need
s to be cleaned. The Library identies a tape cartridge as a cleaning cartridge if it has a barcode
lab
el that starts with CLN or after an unlabeled cleaning tape has been loaded into the tape drive.
The
Library can use a cleaning car tridge from any slot, even if the slot is reserved. The Library keeps
tra
ck of the usage count for each of the cleaning cartridges. When multiple cleaning car tridges are
ava
ilable, the Library will rst choose an unknown cleaning cartridge so the Library c an start tracking
th
e cartridge’s usage count. If the Library knows the usage count for all of the cleaning cartridges, the
Library will use the one with the highest usage count.
