WARNING! The HP StorageWorks MSL8096

Tape Library weighs 46.6 kg (102.7 lb) without

media and 68.8 kg (151.7 lb) with media (96

cartridges). When moving the Library, to reduce

the risk of personal injury or damage to the

Library:

•Observe local health and safety requirements

and guidelines for manual material handling.

•Remove all tapes to reduce the overall weight

of the Library.

•Obtain adequate assistance to lift and stabilize

the Library during installation or removal.

WARNING! When placing the Library into the

rack, to reduce the risk of personal injury or

damage to equipment:

•Extend the rack's leveling jacks to the floor.

•Ensure that the full weight of the rack rests on

the leveling jacks.

•Install stabilizing feet on the rack.

•Extend only one rack component at a time.

Racks may become unstable if more than one

unit is extended at a time.

Confirm that you received the following:

Identifying product components

Remove the packaging and accessories covering the

Library.

With assistance, remove the Library from the box and

place it on a level work surface.

Carefully remove the foam padding and then the bag

from the Library.

Save the packaging materials to move or ship the

Library in the future.

1 Determining your rack type 3 Installing the clip nuts You will need a #2 and #3 Phillips screwdriver, the two rack rails, and the packet of M6 screws and clip nuts appropriate for your rack. 1U markers • The HP System/E rack has 7.1 mm round holes in the rack column. Choose the packet labeled HP Rack System/E. • The HP 5000 and 10000 racks have 9.5 mm square holes in the rack column. Choose the packet labeled HP Rack 5000, 10000.

Optional: Adding a redundant power supply Optional: Adding tape drives With the tape drive upgrade kits, the Tape Library can hold up to four tape drives. With the redundant power supply upgrade kit, the Tape Library will continue to operate without interruption if either power supply fails. To install the redundant power supply, remove the cover plate for the redundant power supply, slide the power supply into the bay until it is firmly seated, and then secure it by tightening the blue thumb screws.

a Planning the parallel SCSI configuration: parallel SCSI 5c Planning the Fiber Channel configuration: Fiber Channel If you are unfamiliar with configuring parallel SCSI devices, read the parallel SCSI configuration information in the User and Service Guide on the documentation CD. Follow these general guidelines when planning the parallel SCSI configuration: • The Library has an LVDS SCSI bus. It is NOT compatible with a standard differential (Diff) or HighVoltage (HVD) SCSI bus.

7 Changing the SCSI ID 8b If you need to change the SCSI ID for any of the tape drives, do so before connecting the Library to the host computer. Connecting the Library: Fibre Channel 1. Attach the power cord to the Library. 2. Power on the Library from the front panel. Remove the FC port cap from Port A on one of the tape drives. Attach one end of the FC cable to Port A on the tape drive. Attach the other end of the FC cable to a switch or HBA. Repeat for each tape drive. 8c 3.

9 Powering on the Library 11 Setting the date and time This option sets the date and time used by the Library to record events and should be set during the initial installation process. Using the operator control panel: Attach the Ethernet cable to the Library and to the LAN. Plug the power cable into the Library and into a power outlet. If you installed the redundant power supply, attach a power cable to its power connector. Power on the Library using the power button on the front panel.

14 Labeling tape cartridges 15 Loading the tape cartridges Use the OCP Operations > Unlock Left Magazines option to release the left magazines. Pull all of the left magazines out about 2 cm (1 in) to clear the lock, and then pull each magazine out individually. Having a bar code label on each tape cartridge enables the Library to identify the cartridge quickly and accurately, which speeds up inventory time.

16 Verifying the installation Using the operator control panel (OCP) 1. Use the HP StorageWorks Library & Tape Tools (L&TT) to verify the installation and check the Library and drive firmware. 2. Use the L&TT to update the firmware if necessary. You can download the latest L&TT from http://www.hp.com/support/tapetools. Using the remote management interface (RMI) With the RMI, you can monitor the Library's status, configure it, and control most of its functions from a web browser or terminal.
