• Name the file in the format host name.cfg.
• Add a mapping entry in the format ip host host-name ip-address for the host name file.
For example:
ip host host1 101.101.101.101
ip host host2 101.101.101.102
ip host client1 101.101.101.103
ip host client2 101.101.101.104
If a device resides in a network different than the TFTP server, configure the UDP helper function on the
gateway. The gateway then changes the broadcast TFTP request from the device to a unicast packet and
forwards the unicast packet to the TFTP server. For more information about UDP helper, see Layer 3—IP
Services Configuration Guide.
Understanding USB-based automatic configuration
USB-based automatic configuration requires a USB disk with the configuration file:
• The configuration file must be saved in the root directory.
• The configuration file must use the name Device serial number.cfg or autodeploy.cfg. If both the
Device serial number.cfg file and autodeploy.cfg file exist, the device prefers Device serial
number.cfg.
During a USB-based automatic configuration, the device compares its main startup configuration file
against the selected configuration file on the USB disk:
• If the two files have the same settings, the device loads its main startup configuration file.
• If the two files have different settings, the device compares the names of the two files:
{ If the two files have different file names, the device does the following:
− Copies the file on the USB disk to its storage medium.
NOTE:
If a file on the device uses the same name as the selected configuration file on the USB disk but is
not the main startup configuration file, it is overwritten.
− Sets the file as the main startup configuration file.
{ If the two files have the same file name, the device does the following:
− Renames its main startup configuration file by using the name original base name_bak.cfg.
− Copies the file on the USB disk to its storage medium.
− Sets the file as the main startup configuration file.
• If the device does not have a main startup configuration file specified or the file is missing, it does
the following:
{ Copies the file on the USB disk to its storage medium.
{ Sets the file as the main startup configuration file.
Using USB-based automatic configuration
1. If the device has two MPUs, remove one MPU. (On an MSR4000.)
