Configuring a 3G modem
3G modem modules include USB 3G modem modules and SIC-3G modem modules.
• A USB 3G modem module is hot swappable. It is managed in cellular interface view, which is still
accessible without a USB 3G modem installed. Configuration for a USB 3G modem in cellular
interface view can still be saved after the USB 3G modem is removed.
• A SIC-3G modem module is not hot swappable. When a SIC-3G modem is installed, the system
dynamically creates a cellular interface to manage the SIC-3G modem based on the slot where the
modem is inserted. When the SIC-3G modem is removed, the system dynamically removes this
cellular interface.
A serial interface channelized from a cellular interface operates in protocol mode, with the link layer
protocol PPP and the network layer protocol IP.
Configuration restrictions and guidelines
• Do not remove a USB 3G modem when it is transmitting data. Execute the shutdown command to
shut down the USB 3G modem before removing it.
• A USB 3G modem is not usable when the USB interface to which the modem is attached is shut
down. For more information about shutting down a USB interface, see Fundamentals Configuration
Guide.
• Configure PPP, DDR, IP address, firewall, and backup center on the cellular interface as needed.
• Unless otherwise noted, configurations for a 3G modem in this document are saved in the NVM of
the 3G modem. To examine whether the configurations take effect, execute the display cellular
command.
