If the SMARTDRV statement is found in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file,
the parameter
/U
is added to the statement, if not already
present. This parameter disables the SMARTDRV CD-ROM
caching.
NOTE If your AUTOEXEC.BAT file includes the WIN
command (to start
Windows automatically), you must edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to
place
WIN after the MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD0HP /M:12 line. This
modification will allow the
MSCDEX command to be launched before
Windows starts.

If the CD-ROM drive is connected to the same cable as the hard
disk drive (that is, it is connected as a slave on the primary IDE
channel), the following two lines are added or modified in the
SYSTEM.INI file:
VirtualHDIRQ=Off
32BitDiskAccess=Off
The original CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and SYSTEM.INI files
are saved under the new names CONFIG.ORG, AUTOEXEC.ORG,
and SYSTEM.ORG.
5 If you don’t want to modify these files, type
N and press .
The installation program makes copies of the system files, adds the
lines described above (in step 4), and saves the new files as
CONFIG.NEW, AUTOEXEC.NEW, and SYSTEM.NEW.
6 When the procedure is complete, remove the floppy disk and restart
your PC.
On start-up, the system reads the new system files and installs the
CD-ROM driver.
