Chapter 6 Disk Drive Firmware Revision
Special Firmware Update Required for Certain
IBM Drives
The SCSI Detail Agent has exposed a hard disk drive firmware issue. Errors occur
if you are using any Ultra3 hard disk drives listed in Table 6-1, and you are using
firmware D84D or P84D along with Netserver Agents 4.53 or 4.53a.
For example, the following errors in the NT System event log every hour:
9/26/00 10:41:23 AM hpnport Warning None 20 N/A \Device\HPN0:
ID(0:01:0); RAM Failure
9/26/00 10:41:23 AM hpnport Warning None 20 N/A \Device\HPN0:
ID(0:01:0); Hardware Error
This is caused by the drive sending a 04/40/80 sense error every time the SCSI Detail
Agent sent it a SCSI Log Sense command to log page 32h (i.e., reading log page 32h,
which happens about every hour). The 04/40/80 sense error code means “hardware
error, degrade mode, diagnostic failed.” This occurred because log page 32h
became corrupted. The corruption happened when the SCSI Detail Agent sent the
drive a Log Select command (a write to log page 32h) and the drive wrote the
incorrect information to log page 32h. This was only an issue with the Log Select
command, and does not affect normal read and write operations. Also the corruption
of the log page does not affect normal read and write operations, including
S.M.A.R.T. statistics information. The issue has been corrected in IBM's disk drive
firmware revisions D94N and P94N. This situation did not exist with Netserver
Agents version 4.52 because it did not support the D84D or P84D firmware.
