Chapter 9 Issues and Problem Resolution
62
This problem results in the following issues/system behaviors, as described in the
cases below. If a specific workaround is not listed with the case, please refer to the
tables below (6-1 and 6-2) to locate the NOS system behaviors that may occur and
the appropriate tool to use for obtaining your desired results.
General Example: You have a Windows 2000 basic disk. This happened either
because it was migrated from Windows NT 4.0 or because Windows 2000 creates a
basic disk by default. You then want to convert the basic disk to dynamic because:
Windows 2000 RAID software (for example, extending the file system) does not
work with basic disk.
The application is written for a certain volume.
The volume is running out of space, so you want to add volume space and do it
without having to reboot the server.
The following process was used for making and expanding the RAID:
1. You plug in some disk drives.
2. The controller assigns chunks of disk space.
3. Initialization combines the chunks together into contiguous free space.
4. NOS sees free space as a virtual disk with a unique SCSI ID and LUN.
5. Using the free space, NOS create a partition and writes a signature on it.
6. NOS formats the partition to set up the file system (for example, FAT or NTFS).
7. The volume (partition plus file system) is referred to by a drive letter, for
example, “C:”.
Case 1:
Problem: The volumes are still usable and the data is OK, but the only
functionality allowed is read, write, and delete. The Windows 2000 Disk
Manager shows the following message during volume extension: “Selected
volume was originally created on basic disk and cannot be extended. Only
volume originally created on dynamic disk can be extended.” Any other
configuration change would require a backup and restore.
Background: Windows NT 4.0 basic disk capabilities, such as, volume set,
software RAID, volume expansion etc., are not allowed after migration to
Windows 2000 basic disk.
Case 2:
