HP NetRAID-4M Configuration and Upgrade Guide (Release 5)

Chapter 9 Issues and Problem Resolution
58
Problem: Under Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000, the NetRAID-4M controller
offers two types of formatting for containers: Full Format (with verify) and Quick
Format (without verify). Neither Full Format nor Quick Format invokes verify. Full
Format is the default; however, it takes longer than Quick Format due to the fairness
algorithm introduced into Release 2.
Workaround: For faster formatting, use the Quick Format checkbox. Bad Block
Replacement (BBR) and Scrubbing will protect data on a newly formatted disk. The
scrubbing operation takes place during container creation and rebuilds.
48 Drive letter lost in Logical Disk Manager (LDM)
Problem: The disk manager in Windows 2000 is not able to retain the drive letter
assignments. When a user creates multiple basic drives utilizing NetRAID-4M
RAID controller, it has been observed that after rebooting the system, the LDM does
not display these newly assigned drive letters. These drive letters are visible in the
Explorer, My Computer and FAST. These drives are fully accessible and there is no
data loss.
Frequency of Occurrence: Very seldom. It is very intermittent problem and hard
to reproduce.
Workaround: Restart the LDM to rescan for the drives and recognize the drive
letters.
49 Single drive with RAID-0
Problem: In a normal striping container the data is distributed evenly across the
drives that are members of that container. During reads and writes we increase
performance significantly utilizing multiple spindles to access the data. In case of a
single drive this concept is not implemented since there is only one spindle. During
the test, when the single drive that holds the stripe container is taken off-line, it
causes the system to lock up. This behavior prevents the user from accessing the data
that is stored on other containers or the OS that resides under other controllers and
disks.
Impact to Customer: Serious. Data integrity is preserved but is not accessible until
reboot.
Frequency of Occurrence: Rare. It is highly unlikely that someone would try to use
a single drive to create a stripe container.
Workaround: Do not create stripes on a single drive.
