Chapter 10 Glossary
Manageability
Describes the various activities that need to be done to keep a computer network up
and running. Activities include inventory collection, software distribution, alert
notification, as well as others. Toptools provides a useful subset of all the
manageability tools needed to effectively manage a network.
Novell Storage System (NSS)
Allows the combination of free space from many areas into one large, logical
volume. The benefits are the ability to create volumes that can hold millions of files,
eliminates current file and volume size restrictions, and provides the ability to
quickly mount and/or repair volumes, modular and versatile, support for new
generation of storage. Multiple name spaces can share the NSS.
Online Capacity Expansion (OCE)
A term used by RAID controller vendors to describe the ability to create a larger
logical array (container) without having to reboot.
Online Volume Extension
MS Windows 2000 term. On a partition (no file system), extension will increase the
free space. On a volume (a partition that has been formatted), extension will increase
the volume size. No reboots are required. (This is supported with dynamic disk
only.)
Partition
A section of a hard disk that contains an independent file system volume. Partitions
can be used to keep multiple operating systems and file systems on the same hard
disk. Note that the term’s partition and volume are almost but not quite
interchangeable. NT 4.0 favors the use of partition. Windows 2000 uses volume.
Partitions - Primary vs. Extended
The first four partitions created are primary. After that, they are extended.
Partitions - Active
The active partition is the partition that the computer boots from upon power-up, and
only one primary partition can be marked active at a time.
