Chapter 10 Glossary
RAID zero-channel
A zero-channel RAID is a PCI card with an input output processor (IOP) but without
the SCSI ASIC. The zero channel RAID card fits into a special PCI socket whose
reserved pins have been wired directly to the SCSI controller that resides on the
motherboard.
SAF-TE - SCSI Accessed Fault-Tolerant Enclosures
SAF-TE is a standard developed by nStor Technologies and Intel. The enclosure
itself is treated as another SCSI device. SAF-TE is used to monitor inventory,
temperature, fan speed, fault conditions, etc.
Simple network management protocols (SNMP)
A popular set of manageability protocols (standards) for the operation of network
management software. Under SNMP architecture, small management programs
known as agents run in special processors contained in a variety of networked
devices. These programs monitor the devices and gather statistical data in a format
known as MIB management information base. A central program, known as the
management console program, polls the agents on a regular basis and downloads the
contents of the MIBs on a regular basis. SNMP also refers to the Windows service
that implements the front end of this protocol on HP Servers. The service is
configured to load a list of “SNMP extension agents” that respond to incoming
requests for information. The service directs incoming network requests to the
appropriate extension agent and packages the agent's response data. All network
interaction is handled by the service.
Simple Volume
An MS Windows 2000 term. One of five possible Disk Manager configurations. The
other configurations are span, stripe, mirror, and RAID 5.
Stripe Set
Similar to a volume set except that stripe set data is stored across all member
partitions evenly instead of one partition at a time. The partitions are on different
drives and should be the same size.
Toptools
A proactive management application that lets a user view settings on a multitude of
devices connected to a LAN, including switches/routers/hubs, client workstations,
servers, and storage devices. It is installed on one computer system and accessed
