from anywhere on the LAN using a web browser like Internet Explorer. Toptools
requires instrumentation on each managed device/target. Instrumentation provides
information on warnings, faults, temperature, inventory, performance, etc. For HP
Servers, the instrumentation is provided by the HP Server Agents.
Toptools, Instant
Instant Toptools is a reactive support tool that installs on a single HP Server. It
collects hardware event logs and sensor readings to indicate the health of the system
and reports configuration information. Instant Toptools does nothing until a user
interacts with the application (requests some data).
Volume
A volume is a partition with a file system. A volume is the structure imposed upon
a partition to allow files to be indexed. A volume contains the root directory and also
maintains allocation tables to show what space is occupied. File systems operate
with volume information to determine where to store files and how to retrieve them.
Standard volumes are simply regular formatted partitions. Windows NT 4.0 can
create logical partitions containing volumes that extend across more than one
physical partition. Volumes are normally contained in a single partition, but volume
sets and stripe sets are examples of logical partitions that extend across multiple
physical partitions.
Volume Set
Up to 32 partitions can be combined into one volume known as a volume set. The
volume set receives a single drive letter and can be treated as a single partition for
the purposes of formatting and file system use by the operating system. When data
is stored to a volume set, the data is stored to the partitions one partition at a time.
When one partition is full, the next partition is used.
Volume Set Extension
A great way to add more space to a nearly full NTFS volume. Simply add another
hard disk to your computer and add that disk to the volume set with the disk
administrator utility. You can create and extend volume sets, but you cannot shrink
a volume set. Instead you must delete it, returning the space to free space, and then
create a new volume or volume set.
Volume Spanning
MS Windows 2000 term, equivalent to an NT4 volume set.
