Executive Summary
Selecting the right server to keep your organization’s small work group,
remote office, or department up and running is no easy task. The decision
is usually made less easy by the range of choices between competing
technologies made available from the various server vendors. Sometimes
the choice, with the proper information, can be a non-issue as in the choice
between the Intel Pentium
®
III and the Intel Pentium III Xeon processors in a
dual processor server.
It is important to remember that from both a functionality and performance
point-of-view, the
2-way Intel Pentium III processor is virtually the same as
the
2-way Intel Pentium III Xeon processor. The only minor difference,
respectively, is the “slot 1” vs the “slot 2” form factor. In other words, they are
the same technology in different packages. The microprocessor inside the
package is exactly the same.
A Closer Look
There are two ways to compare competitive products: a line-by-line
comparison of the specifications on paper and a comparison of the
performance. In both cases, with the exception of the form factor, there is no
appreciable difference between the two processors.
Specifications

only difference is the form factor that each processor takes.
