Performance
Chart 1 shows a 1:1 performance comparison between a server using an Intel Pentium III
processor versus a server that uses an Intel Pentium III Xeon processor. This test was
conducted using a processor-intensive workload, which isolates the performance of the
processors and de-emphasizes other I/O or network effects. As can be plainly noted, both
servers perform virtually identically in this processor test. This re-enforces the key
argument: these two processors are virtually identical.
A Word about Other Xeon Processors
It is important to remember that the two types of processors under discussion in this
product paper are both
two-way
(dual processor) capable only with 256KB L2 cache.
This paper does not make any attempt to discuss other cache sizes or
four-way
and
above processing. No implication is intended nor should be drawn with respect to other
Xeon processors.
